Prayers of the Faithful for Fourth Sunday of Advent

Sunday | Liturgical Color: Violet

Readings: Mi 5:1-4a ยท Heb 10:5-10 ยท Lk 1:39-45 (Lectionary 12)

The readings in brief: Micah says that from Bethlehem, small among the clans of Judah, will come a ruler who will shepherd his people and be their peace. The Letter to the Hebrews has Christ say on entering the world: here I am, I have come to do your will. Mary goes in haste to the hill country; at her greeting the child leaps in Elizabeth's womb, and Elizabeth calls her blessed for believing.

Introduction (priest): Brothers and sisters, in this season of waiting let us ask the Father to prepare the world for the coming of his Son.

Concluding prayer (priest): Come, Lord, and do not delay. Answer the prayers of your Church and let your light shine on all who wait for you, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Option 1

1.For the Church: that, like Mary, she may arise and go in haste, carrying Christ to those who wait for him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For the little towns and forgotten places of the earth, like Bethlehem: that from them may come those who will shepherd their peoples in peace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers who are with child, and for the children who leap in their wombs: that they may be blessed and kept safe, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.For the elderly who, like Elizabeth, receive an unexpected visit: that they may be filled with the Holy Spirit and with joy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For ourselves: that, with Christ coming into the world, we may say, โ€œLo, I come to do thy will, O Godโ€, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those who light the fourth candle of Advent, and for all who will travel to be with their families this week.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, who believed what was told them from the Lord, may be called blessed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Christian communities divided by mistrust, that listening, prayer, and shared service may prepare new paths of unity, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For nations receiving people displaced from home, that responsible hospitality may offer safety and hope, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For people waiting for a diagnosis or treatment, that compassionate care and patient companionship may sustain them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.For our community, that Mary's visit to Elizabeth may inspire us to carry Christ's joy through attentive presence and generous help, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For all who have died, especially N., that Christ may bring them into the fullness of the kingdom we await, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
