Prayers of the Faithful examples are short intentions offered at Mass for the Church, the world, people in need and the local community. They are also called the Universal Prayer or General Intercessions. Below are seven sample intentions you can adapt with your parish.

Seven Prayers of the Faithful examples
In these examples, the reader ends each intention with “We pray to the Lord.” The congregation replies: “Lord, hear our prayer.”
1. For the Church
For our Pope, our bishops, priests, and all leaders of the Church, that they may guide us with wisdom and compassion. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
2. For world leaders and peace
For all those in positions of authority, that they may work tirelessly for justice and peace in our world. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
3. For those in need
For the poor, the sick, and the marginalized in our society, that they may find comfort and support through our Christian charity. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
4. For people affected by disasters
For those affected by recent natural disasters, that they may find strength and hope in their recovery. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
5. For the local community
For our parish community, that we may grow in faith, hope, and love, and be a beacon of Christ’s light in our neighborhood. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
6. For vocations
For an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life, that more young people may answer God’s call to serve. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
7. For the deceased
For all the faithful departed, especially [names of recently deceased], that they may rest in God’s eternal peace. We pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear our prayer.
How to adapt these intentions for Mass
Choose intentions that reflect the readings, season and real needs of your parish. Replace bracketed names before the celebration, and agree the wording and response with the celebrant. The seven examples above are choices, not a required number for every Mass.
The usual order in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, nos. 69-71, moves from the Church to public authorities and the world, then people facing hardship and the local community. Weddings, funerals and other particular celebrations may focus more closely on the occasion. Intentions should be brief and express the prayer of the whole community.
The priest introduces and concludes the prayer. A deacon, reader or another designated minister announces the intentions. The assembly joins in through a common response or silent prayer.
