Immaculate Conception Prayers of the Faithful: 6 Sets

Here are six complete sets of prayers of the faithful for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8. Each set prays for the Church, for the world, for mothers, families and people in need, and for the local community. Each ends with two optional intentions, marked I and II, for the sick and for the dead.

The feast celebrates that Mary, “from the first moment of her conception,” was preserved from all stain of original sin by a singular grace of God, in view of the merits of her Son (CCC 491, quoting Pius IX, 1854). In 2026 it falls on Tuesday, December 8. It is the patronal feast of the United States and a holy day of obligation there.

How to use these prayers

Choose one set and adapt it; you may swap in an intention from another set.
Keep it short. Four to six intentions are enough; the Church asks that intentions be “sober” and “succinct” (GIRM 71).
Fill in names where you see N. or (Names).
Give the reader a printed copy and agree on the response, usually “Lord, hear our prayer.”
Use the optional intentions. Intention I is for the sick, the bereaved or a parish need; intention II is for the dead. Add names, or leave them out.
Address God, not Mary. The intentions are prayers to the Father. We ask “through Mary’s intercession”; we do not address the petitions to her.
Echo the Gospel. The Gospel is the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). A set built on the day’s readings is on the page of prayers of the faithful for December 8, 2026.

Option 1: For Mothers, Vocations and the Protection of Life

For the Church, that following Mary’s example, she may remain pure and spotless in faith and service, let us pray to the Lord.
For the Holy Father, bishops, priests, and religious, that through Mary’s intercession they may lead God’s people in holiness, let us pray to the Lord.
For all mothers, that they may find inspiration in Mary’s perfect motherhood, let us pray to the Lord.
For young people discerning their vocation, that Mary’s “yes” may inspire their response to God’s call, let us pray to the Lord.
For the protection of human life from conception to natural death, let us pray to the Lord.
I. For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events, let us pray to the Lord.

Option 2: For Expectant Mothers and Those Struggling with Temptation

For the holy Catholic Church, that she may reflect Mary’s fidelity to God’s will, let us pray to the Lord.
For all Christian people, that we may honor Mary’s unique role in salvation history, let us pray to the Lord.
For expectant mothers, that through Mary’s intercession they may be blessed with safe deliveries, let us pray to the Lord.
For those struggling with temptation, that Mary’s sinless life may inspire their pursuit of holiness, let us pray to the Lord.
For respect for the dignity of all human persons, created in God’s image, let us pray to the Lord.
I. For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events, let us pray to the Lord.
II. For all the faithful departed, especially N., let us pray to the Lord.

Option 3: For Families, Consecrated Men and Women, and the Unborn

For our Holy Father and all bishops, that Mary may guide them in shepherding God’s people, let us pray to the Lord.
For religious men and women, that Mary’s purity may inspire their consecrated life, let us pray to the Lord.
For families, that they may find in Mary and Joseph a model of holy family life, let us pray to the Lord.
For those seeking God’s will, that Mary’s obedience may inspire their decisions, let us pray to the Lord.
For the unborn and their parents, that they may receive the support they need, let us pray to the Lord.

Option 4: For Devotion to Mary and Those Consecrated to Her

For the universal Church, that she may proclaim Mary’s privileged role with joy, let us pray to the Lord.
For all Christians, that we may grow in devotion to our Blessed Mother, let us pray to the Lord.
For those consecrated to Mary, that they may live their commitment faithfully, let us pray to the Lord.
For young women, that they may find in Mary a model of authentic femininity, let us pray to the Lord.
For greater respect for the sanctity of human life, let us pray to the Lord.

II. For our deceased relatives and friends, especially N., let us pray to the Lord.

Option 5: For Evangelization, Vocations and Couples Hoping for a Child

For the Church’s mission of evangelization, that it may be guided by Mary’s maternal care, let us pray to the Lord.
For vocations to the priesthood and religious life, through Mary’s intercession, let us pray to the Lord.
For married couples struggling with infertility, that they may find hope through Mary’s prayers, let us pray to the Lord.
For those who have wandered from the faith, that Mary may guide them home, let us pray to the Lord.
For a deeper appreciation of the gift of grace in our lives, let us pray to the Lord.

For all mothers, especially those facing difficult pregnancies, let us pray to the Lord.
For unity among Christians through our common devotion to Mary, let us pray to the Lord.

A sample introduction and closing prayer

The priest introduces and concludes the intentions (GIRM 71). These samples were written for this guide; the celebrant may use his own words.

Introduction:

Brothers and sisters, God chose Mary from the first moment of her life to be the mother of his Son. Trusting in her intercession, let us bring our prayers to the Father, who has done great things for us.

Concluding prayer:

Father, you kept the Virgin Mary free from sin from the first moment of her life. Hear the prayers of your people and, by her intercession, help us to say yes to your will each day. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Immaculate Conception about the conception of Jesus?

No. It is about Mary’s own conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne: from that first moment she was free from original sin. The conception of Jesus is celebrated at the Annunciation, on March 25. The Gospel of December 8 is the Annunciation because there the angel greets Mary as “full of grace.”

Is December 8 a holy day of obligation?

In the United States, yes; in 2026 it falls on a Tuesday. It is also a day of obligation in Ireland and the Philippines, for example, but not in England and Wales, Canada or Australia. Check your own diocese, and see our list of holy days of obligation.

What is the liturgical color for the Immaculate Conception?

White, as for other solemnities of Our Lady, even though the feast falls in Advent.

Should every intention mention Mary?

No. One or two references are enough. The order stays the same as at any Mass: the Church, the world, those in need, the local community (GIRM 70).
