Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Monday, 12th Week in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.That the Church may always put to her people the question Christ put to his disciples: 'Who do you say that I am?' — drawing each generation to a personal, living confession of faith in Jesus as the Christ of God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may govern not by grasping at power but by taking up the daily cross of service — denying themselves for those they are called to lead, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who are suffering and feel that following Christ has cost them dearly — that they may hear his promise that losing one's life for his sake is the path to finding it truly, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may each answer for ourselves the question 'Who do you say that I am?' and may our answer bear fruit in a daily willingness to deny ourselves and follow him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our community, that we may support one another in carrying the crosses of daily life — illness, grief, uncertainty, struggle — as disciples who follow the Lord together, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who are newly confirmed or received into the Church, that their confession of Christ may deepen throughout their lives.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may hear Christ say to them, 'You are the Christ of God,' and live forever in his risen presence, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all pastors, that they may constantly place before the faithful the living question of Christ: 'Who do you say that I am?' — and nourish the personal faith of every soul in their care, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That those who hold authority in nations and communities may take up the cross of true service, putting aside ambition and self-interest for the good of those they govern, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who have lost much because they chose to follow Christ — families divided, careers sacrificed, friendships broken — that his promise of life found in losing may sustain and strengthen them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may pray each day for the courage to deny ourselves, take up whatever cross is ours, and follow Christ in whatever road he opens before us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For all who are weary in the Christian life — whose crosses feel too heavy — that they may find in the community of the Church the strength of others walking the same path, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For vocations to the priesthood and religious life, that men and women may hear Christ's call and follow without reserve.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who died bearing their cross have now laid it down and entered the joy of the one who carried his for our sake, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.That the Church may confess Jesus as the Christ of God not only with words but with deeds — and may that confession express itself in welcome and protection for every unborn child, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may take up the daily cross of defending life even when it is costly, knowing that what the world calls loss can be the pathway to what endures, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers who feel that carrying this child to term is a cross too heavy to bear — that they may encounter companions willing to carry it with them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That all who serve in pro-life ministry may find in Christ's own self-denial the model and the strength for their daily sacrifice of time, reputation, and energy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For all unborn children: that the God who asks 'Who do you say that I am?' may welcome each of them as known, loved, and eternally precious to him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who have lost a child — through miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion — that Christ's promise of life found in loss may bring them consolation and hope.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all children who died before birth may be gathered by the Christ who calls the helpless to himself and rest in him forever, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
