Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.That the Church may model forgiveness without limit—seventy-seven times—never keeping a record of wrongs but extending God's boundless mercy to all, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That civil leaders may seek reconciliation and peace, choosing forgiveness over retribution in resolving conflicts among peoples and nations, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those burdened by inability to forgive—whose unforgiven debt chains them as much as their debtors—that God's grace may loosen those chains, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may receive God's infinite mercy for our own vast debts of sin, and freely extend that same mercy to those who have wronged us, however small their debt, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place where forgiveness is freely offered and received, where no one is choked by another's refusal to release old grievances, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those who carry deep wounds of betrayal or injustice, that God's healing may make forgiveness possible.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who sought God's forgiveness may now rest in the perfect mercy of His eternal kingdom, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all pastors, that they may be ministers of God's scandalous mercy—a mercy that cancels ten thousand talents—helping others experience its liberating power, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all nations may cultivate cultures of forgiveness and restoration rather than cultures of retribution and revenge, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who find it impossible to forgive themselves, who are tormented by their own guilt, that the King who cancels impossible debts may set them free, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may honestly ask ourselves whether we have forgiven others as God has forgiven us—and where we have not, humbly return to the source of all mercy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a school of forgiveness where the parable of the unforgiving servant is not a cautionary tale about others but a mirror held up to ourselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a deeper participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation as the place where our enormous debts are cancelled.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may find in God a King who settles all accounts with mercy, welcoming them into eternal peace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Alternate Prayers for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.That the Church may never demand of others what she has freely received from God—boundless mercy—but always give back what she herself has been given, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That governments may build restorative systems that heal wounds rather than perpetuate cycles of debt, punishment, and retaliation, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those imprisoned by bitterness—whose unforgiveness has become a kind of self-imposed torment—that they may be released through the miracle of genuine forgiveness, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may grasp how much we ourselves have been forgiven—the ten thousand talents of our own sin—and let that understanding make forgiveness of others not only possible but natural, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our community may be characterized by a generosity of heart that releases others from their debts to us, as God has released us from our far greater debt to Him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For the grace to forgive 'from the heart'—not merely in word but in the deep releasing of old wounds.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who forgave their neighbors may now receive the mercy that surpasses all measure from God their Father, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that the Church he leads may go again and again to the King for forgiveness of her own failings, and from that encounter, forgive others without limit, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may discover that the path to peace runs through forgiveness—personal and communal—and that no human debt is too great for God's mercy to cancel, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those tormented by guilt over sins they cannot believe God would forgive, that they may meet the King who cancels ten thousand talents and hear: 'I forgive you all that debt,' let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may not choke our brothers and sisters with rigid demands, forgetting that we ourselves stand only because of God's undeserved and boundless grace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that forgiving from the heart may be taught by word and example, and that the released may experience the freedom only forgiveness can give, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For the gift of a merciful heart—one that forgives not seven times but seventy-seven times.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be welcomed into the kingdom where the Father settles every account with mercy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
