Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Thursday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.That the Church may be a community of merciful love—loving enemies, blessing those who curse her, and refusing to repay evil with evil, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That civil leaders may pursue the good of all, including those who oppose them, governing for the common benefit rather than for partisan advantage, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who have been betrayed, mistreated, or cursed by others, that the grace of Christ may enable them to pray for those who have hurt them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may apply the Golden Rule in every relationship—doing to others what we wish they would do to us—especially with those we find most difficult, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place of generous mercy, where the measure we give is always greater than the measure we have received, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those struggling to forgive, that the grace of Christ's mercy may flow through them to those who have wounded them.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who loved their enemies and showed mercy may now receive the mercy of God in full measure, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all bishops, that they may be children of the Most High—showing merciful love to all, as the Father is good to the ungrateful and the wicked, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all nations may adopt the Golden Rule as the foundation of their laws and international relations, knowing that the measure they use will be measured back to them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those in situations of conflict or personal enmity, that the command to love enemies may take root in their hearts and begin to transform their circumstances, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may stop condemning and judging—recognizing the measure we use for others will be used for us—and instead extend the generous mercy we ourselves need, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that forgiving the unforgivable and loving the unlovable may not remain an ideal but become a daily practice sustained by prayer and grace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those who have been deeply wronged, that they may find in Christ the strength to bless rather than curse.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may receive the measure of God's mercy that surpasses all earthly measure, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.That the Church may love without condition—doing good to those considered inconvenient, giving to those who cannot give back—following the Golden Rule with the most vulnerable in our midst, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That civil authorities may apply the Golden Rule to the unborn: providing for the most defenseless what we ourselves would want if we were in their position, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers in difficult pregnancies who feel abandoned by society, culture, or family, that they may encounter a Church that loves unconditionally and expects nothing in return, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may not judge pregnant women in crisis but extend the mercy we ourselves need, remembering: 'The measure you measure will be measured back to you,' let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For unborn children who cannot reciprocate love or advocate for themselves, that we may love them as the Father loves the ungrateful—expecting nothing back, giving everything freely, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who love mothers in crisis without conditions or expectations of return.Lord, hear our prayer.
That all children lost before birth may receive the full measure of God's mercy and love in His eternal kingdom, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
