Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

Option 1

1.That the Church may always be the boat on the stormy sea — battered by waves, straining against the wind — yet unafraid, for Christ comes walking toward her across the water, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That leaders of nations may not be paralyzed by fear when storms arise but seek the presence of Christ, who alone calms every wind and commands every wave, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who are going through the storms of life — illness, loss, anxiety, despair — that they may hear Christ say: 'Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid', let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may be like Peter — bold enough to step out of the boat toward Christ — and when we begin to sink, quick to cry out: 'Lord, save me!', let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may be a boat where all who are sinking may grab hold, and together reach the shore where Jesus is waiting for us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those whose faith is wavering, that they may fix their eyes on Christ and not on the storm around them.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may have heard Christ's 'Do not be afraid' and now rest in His eternal peace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that when the Church is battered by waves of confusion or opposition, he may hear Christ's voice above the wind and lead the bark of Peter safely through, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations troubled by conflict and division may find in Christ the one who walks toward them across the chaos and stretches out His hand to save, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those of little faith — including ourselves — that the honest prayer of Peter, 'Lord, save me!', may always be on our lips in every moment of doubt or danger, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may worship Jesus as the disciples did — 'Truly, you are the Son of God' — and allow that act of faith to anchor us in every storm of life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our community, that we may support those whose faith is sinking, reaching out our hand as Christ reached out to Peter, before they are overwhelmed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who minister to those in crisis — those who reach out a hand to the sinking — that they may do so with the courage and compassion of Christ.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be taken safely by the hand of Christ across the final storm into the harbor of eternal life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.That the Church may always stretch out her hand to mothers who are sinking under the weight of a crisis pregnancy, saying with Christ: 'Take courage, do not be afraid', let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may reach out in practical support to mothers and unborn children at risk, rather than looking away from the storm that threatens their lives, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers facing unplanned pregnancies who cry out 'Lord, save me!', that they may feel Christ's hand reaching through our community to steady and strengthen them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may be like Christ in this Gospel — going out to meet the frightened, not waiting for them to come to us — in every situation where a life is at risk, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our community, that we may be a boat of safety for the vulnerable — unborn children and their mothers — where no one is left to sink alone, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who staff pregnancy resource centers and crisis helplines, that their outreach may be a hand of Christ to those who are sinking.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all innocent children lost before birth may be lifted by the hand of Christ from the waters of death into the safety of His eternal arms, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
