Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for the EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Option 1

1.That the Church may always be the place where the hungry are fed — with the Bread of Life in the Eucharist and with the Word of God that satisfies every longing, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That leaders of nations may hear the disciples' report of the hungry crowd and be moved to distribute what they have, rather than sending the poor away to fend for themselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For the hungry of our world — those who lack food, hope, or belonging — that Jesus who multiplied five loaves for five thousand may multiply the generosity of His people today, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may offer to Christ whatever we have — however small it seems — trusting that He can bless it, break it, and make it abundantly more than enough, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may never send the hungry away but find creative and faithful ways to share what we have with all who come to us in need, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who minister to the physical and spiritual hunger of others, that their service may be blessed and multiplied.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may be satisfied with the Bread of Heaven at the eternal banquet of God's kingdom, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may follow the example of Jesus who looked up to heaven, blessed, broke, and gave — and so nourish the whole Church with the Bread of Life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations may be moved by the sight of hungry crowds and choose cooperation and generosity over hoarding and self-interest, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For the poor and marginalized in our own communities, that the miracle of Eucharistic generosity may overflow from our table to theirs, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may come to the Eucharist with the hunger of the crowd on the hillside, and leave as those who have eaten their fill, with twelve baskets to spare, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our community, that our celebration of the Eucharist may always spill outward into concrete acts of feeding the hungry and caring for those in need, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a deeper reverence for the Eucharist as the Bread of Life that satisfies the hunger of every human heart.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may take their place at the eternal banquet where all are fed and none go away hungry, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Alternate General Intercessions for the EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Option 1

1.That the Church may proclaim with conviction: 'You give them something to eat' — and so be a community of active, inventive generosity that reflects Christ's own compassion for every hungry crowd, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That leaders of nations may look with compassion on the world's hungry rather than dismissing them, and muster the will to share the earth's abundance more justly, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

4.That we may not underestimate what we have to offer God: five loaves, two fish, a little time, a small donation — trusting that His blessing makes it enough and more than enough, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may look up to heaven, bless what we have, and break it generously, trusting that the Lord will provide the increase for all who gather at our table, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who are hungry — physically or spiritually — that they may be fed through the generosity of Christ's disciples today.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may feast forever at the table prepared by Christ who multiplies every grace into eternal abundance, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may lead the Church to see with the eyes of Christ — looking out on the crowd with compassion — and to act with the boldness that multiplies five loaves into a feast, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations may take seriously the mission implied in today's Gospel: do not send the hungry away, but find the means among us to feed them all, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who have come to the Church hungry and been turned away or felt unwelcome, that Christ may lead them back to the table and feed them with His Word and sacraments, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may receive Communion this Sunday with renewed awareness that we are eating the same Bread that satisfied five thousand — and that this Bread is Christ Himself, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our community, that the twelve baskets left over may remind us that God always gives more than enough — and that we may share that abundance without holding back, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a spirit of Eucharistic generosity — receiving abundantly and giving abundantly in return.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be raised to the eternal feast where hunger and thirst are no more, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
