Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for The Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday

Option 1

1.That the Church may be a tireless sower, scattering the seed of God's word on every kind of ground, trusting that the master of the harvest will bring it to fruit in His own time, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may hear the word of justice and let it take root — not on rocky ground where it lasts only until adversity comes, but in the deep soil of genuine conviction, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those whose faith has been choked by the worries of life or the lure of riches, that Christ may loosen the thorns and let the word breathe and grow again in their hearts, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may be rich soil — those who hear the word and understand it — and bear the abundant fruit of a life shaped by the Gospel: thirty, sixty, a hundredfold, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be both fertile ground and generous sower, receiving the word with open hearts and scattering it with open hands to all around us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who received the word and bore fruit may now enjoy the hundredfold harvest of eternal life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may sow the word of God with the generous boldness of the sower who scatters seed everywhere, trusting it will find its rich soil, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may have ears to hear — for the one who listens and understands the word will bear fruit beyond all that the world can produce, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those whose faith falls on rocky ground — enthusiastic at first but fading under pressure — that deeper roots may grow so that the word survives whatever trial comes, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may protect the word sown in our hearts from the birds that snatch it, the sun that scorches it, and the thorns that choke it — by prayer, the sacraments, and community, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a school of listening — where the word is heard, pondered, and lived until it yields its thirty, sixty, and hundredfold harvest, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who sow the word in difficult soil — missionaries, teachers, parents, prison chaplains.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be the good soil of which Christ speaks — having heard, understood, and borne fruit that now lasts forever, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Variations if Optional Memorial is not celebrated

Option 1

1.That the Church may never grow discouraged by seed that falls on hard ground or among thorns, but keep sowing with the confidence of the farmer who knows the rich soil is also there, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations may prepare the ground of their common life for seeds of justice, truth, and dignity — clearing the thorns of corruption and loosening the hard path of indifference, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those at different stages of growth in faith — some just sprouting, some deep-rooted, some scorched by trial — that this community may water them all with patience and encouragement, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may ask ourselves honestly what kind of soil we are today — path, rock, thorn, or rich earth — and allow the Lord to till and deepen us where we are hard or shallow, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place of patient sowing and joyful harvesting — where no person is written off as hopeless ground and every seed of grace is celebrated, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For families who are working to sow the faith in their children — may they trust the seed even when growth is slow.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all our beloved dead may be received into the eternal harvest of the one who scatters seed lavishly and wastes nothing He has sown, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may preach the word in season and out, trusting that the sower's task is to sow — and the harvest belongs to God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may have the humility to be soil rather than sowers — receiving what God plants rather than insisting on their own wisdom — and find in this receptivity the secret of a hundredfold harvest, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those crushed by the hard path of life's disappointments, that the word of God may find a crack in the hardness and begin again to grow in them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may pull up the thorns of anxiety, greed, and distraction that crowd out the word in our lives, making room for it to grow into the full fruit it was meant to bear, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may send us out from this Sunday Eucharist as sowers — word in hand, generous and undiscouraged — into the fields that are already white for harvest, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a renewed commitment to reading, hearing, and living the word of God in our homes and communities.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be found to have been rich soil after all — bearing fruit that was hidden from the world but known to the Lord who planted it, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
