Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Option 1

1.That the Church, inspired by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, may always defend the full truth of who Christ is — truly God and truly man — against every distortion, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may seek the truth and uphold it even at personal cost, as Saint Cyril stood firm at the Council of Ephesus for the full dignity of Christ and His Mother, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For theologians and teachers of the faith, that they may follow Saint Cyril in holding fast to the apostolic tradition while engaging with clarity and charity those who err, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may honour Mary as Theotokos — God-bearer — and through her intercession grow in faith in the Word made flesh who dwells among us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place where the true identity of Christ is proclaimed with confidence: one Son, one Lord, fully divine and fully human, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who study and teach theology, that they may be guided by the Spirit of truth.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who confessed the full faith in Christ may now behold the face of the God-man they defended in life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may teach with the clarity and courage of Saint Cyril, never yielding the truth of Christ to popular pressure or political expediency, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may come to know Jesus Christ as the one Son of God incarnate — the heart of the Christian faith which Saint Cyril gave his life to defend, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who are confused by false or partial images of Christ, that they may encounter the full mystery: the eternal Word who took flesh from the Virgin Mary, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may venerate the Mother of God with the faith of the Church, knowing that in calling Mary Theotokos we confess the full truth of her Son's identity, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a community of sound faith, rooted in the tradition the Fathers like Cyril handed on, and enriched by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died in the faith of the Church may be welcomed by the Christ whose true nature Saint Cyril so fearlessly proclaimed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Variations if Solemnity is not celebrated

Option 1

1.That the Church may always stretch out her hand to those whom society considers untouchable, imitating Christ who touched the leper and said: I will do it — be made clean, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may show the courage of Christ, reaching across boundaries of prejudice and exclusion to restore the dignity of those cast out of society, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who feel unclean, ashamed, or cast out — those suffering addiction, mental illness, or profound sinfulness — that they may hear Christ say: I will it; be made clean, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may come to Christ with the humble faith of the leper: Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean — trusting entirely in His will and His power, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place where no one is treated as untouchable, where Christ's healing touch reaches every person on the margins, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, cleansed by the waters of baptism, may now stand before God pure and whole in His eternal presence, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may reach with the hand of mercy to those on the peripheries of the Church and society, following the Lord who touched what no one else would touch, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may recognise the healing power of compassionate touch — the willingness to approach those whom others avoid — as a sign of the kingdom of God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For the sick and those suffering from diseases that carry stigma, that they may experience in the care of others the touch of Christ who wills their wholeness and dignity, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may bring to Christ in prayer all who need healing — body and soul — trusting in His power and His desire to make us whole, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a community of healing and welcome, where Christ's touch is extended through every act of mercy and every word of encouragement, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all healthcare workers and chaplains who bring healing and comfort in Christ's name.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be raised to fullness of life by the same Lord who stretched out His hand to heal, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
