Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Option 1

1.That the Church, like Elizabeth and Zechariah rejoicing at John's birth, may always recognise the miraculous gift of new life and give thanks for God's faithfulness, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders, hearing the name John — God is gracious — may govern by the same grace, choosing policies that protect and welcome the most vulnerable, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For parents who await a child with fear or uncertainty, that they may be strengthened by the story of Elizabeth and Zechariah, who received more than they dared hope, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may, like Zechariah, open our mouths to bless God for every gift of life He places before us, proclaiming His praise to all who will hear, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may wonder at the works of God in its midst and ask with joy: what then will this child be — for the hand of the Lord is with him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who rejoiced in God's gifts may now join John and all the saints in their eternal song of praise, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may be, like John, a voice crying out in faithfulness, so that the hand of the Lord may be seen working through his ministry, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may recognise that every birth is a sign of God's gracious favour, and that every child is a word spoken by God into human history, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those whose faith has grown silent like Zechariah's, that the birth of new hope may loosen their tongues and fill their hearts with praise of God's mercy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may name our children for the saints and raise them, as John was raised, to grow strong in spirit and to know the Lord from their earliest years, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may see itself as a community from whose midst God calls His servants — and may it always ask with wonder: what will this child be? let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who are expecting a child, and for those who accompany them in joy and support.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may enter the eternal joy prepared for those, like John, in whom the hand of the Lord was at work, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Variations if Solemnity is not celebrated

Option 1

1.That the Church may always proclaim the golden rule as the heart of the moral life: do to others whatever you would have them do to you, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may govern by the golden rule, treating peoples and nations with the fairness and dignity they would wish for themselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who feel they have been treated unjustly, that they may find healing, and may their own experience lead them to greater compassion for others, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may enter through the narrow gate, embracing the self-giving love that Christ demands and finding in it the freedom and life that the wide road can never offer, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place where the golden rule is lived concretely — each person treating the other with the respect and care they would wish to receive, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed who walked the narrow road of the Gospel may now enter into life eternal, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may guide the Church to live the golden rule boldly, setting an example of treating every person — friend and enemy alike — as Christ teaches, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may recognise the golden rule as the summary of the law and the prophets — a guide to justice, peace, and human dignity woven into our very nature, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who are weary from the demands of the narrow road, that they may find renewed energy in the companionship of the community and the grace of the sacraments, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may discern wisely what is holy and sacred, sharing the gifts of faith with prudence and generosity where they can bear fruit, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a community where the golden rule shapes every relationship — how we welcome strangers, serve the poor, and treat one another in daily life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a deeper commitment to living the golden rule in our families, parishes, and communities.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may receive from God the mercy and love they showed to others in their earthly lives, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
