Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

Option 1

1.That the Church may always lead with mercy before judgment, removing the plank from her own eye before pointing to the splinter in another's, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may govern with humility, aware that the standard by which they judge others will be used to measure themselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who have been harshly judged or condemned by others, that they may find healing in Christ's compassion and a community that seeks first to understand, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may remove the wooden beam from our own eye first, so that we may see clearly to help our brother or sister with the splinter in theirs, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place of honest, charitable fraternal correction — never harsh judgment but always patient mercy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, etc., special projects or events.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may be judged by the mercy of Christ, who bore our sins rather than condemn us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that he may guide the Church to admonish with gentleness, knowing that as we judge, so we shall be judged, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may renounce the culture of condemnation and grow in the willingness to examine their own failings before condemning others, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those trapped in cycles of self-righteousness or pride, that Christ's word may soften their hearts and open their eyes to their own need for mercy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may practice fraternal correction in the spirit of the Gospel — not to condemn but to help one another see more clearly and walk more faithfully, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that it may be a community of mercy and honest self-examination, where no one is afraid to acknowledge their own blindness and seek Christ's light, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a spirit of charity and humility in all our judgments of others.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may receive from God the same mercy they showed to others in their lives, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.That the Church may speak the truth about the sanctity of life without self-righteousness, removing any plank of hypocrisy so her witness to the unborn may be credible and merciful, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may uphold the dignity of all human life, judging policy not by convenience but by the standard of compassion they would wish applied to themselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For women who have experienced abortion and feel judged rather than loved, that they may encounter the mercy of Christ and find healing in His Church, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That those who advocate for the unborn may do so with humility and compassion, seeing the full humanity of mothers in crisis, not reducing them to a single decision, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our local community may be a place where truth about life is spoken with love, and where every person — mother, father, child — is met with mercy, not condemnation, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who minister to women and men wounded by abortion, offering mercy, healing, and hope.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all children who died before birth may rest in the mercy of the One who judges with perfect love, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
