Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for the 10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Option 1

1.For the Church, that she may embody Christ's radical command — offering no violent resistance to evil, turning the other cheek, going beyond what is demanded — and so disarm hostility with a love the world cannot explain, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For world leaders and peacemakers, that they may seek solutions to conflict that do not simply mirror evil with evil, but pursue the harder path of justice without vengeance, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who have been wronged, cheated, or struck — those for whom the old law of retaliation feels just — that the grace of Christ may free them to respond with a generosity that transforms rather than escalates, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may learn to give more than what is asked — to go the second mile, to offer the cloak as well as the tunic — discovering in this radical generosity the freedom of those who have nothing to protect, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For the faithful departed, that Christ who offered no resistance but gave himself completely may bring them through death into the life that no power could take from him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For victims of violence and injustice, that they may find in Christ's example both consolation and a path through their pain.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be raised by the one who conquered death not by force but by total self-giving, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all who lead the Church, that they may model Christ's way of non-retaliation — absorbing hostility without returning it — and teach the faithful to do the same in their daily lives, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations may resist the cycle of retribution that has fuelled wars across the centuries, and discover through negotiation and mercy the peace that reprisal never achieves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those in poverty who are asked to give what little they have — their coat, their time, their last resources — that God may see their generosity and provide abundantly in return, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may not approach the Gospel's hard demands with calculation — 'how much must I give?' — but with the freedom of love, which gives more than is asked because it is not counting, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may be a community known not for protecting our own interests but for going the extra mile — in time, service, and mercy — for those in need around us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those engaged in restorative justice ministries, prison outreach, and conflict mediation, that they may be sustained in their work.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may rest in the peace of Christ who conquered not by retaliating but by loving to the end, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.For the Church, that she may respond to the violence of abortion not with a matching aggression but with the extra mile of love — building more pregnancy centers, more support networks, more pathways to life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That legislators may enact laws that protect unborn children not out of political calculation but out of the conviction that justice demands we go further than the minimum in defending the most vulnerable, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For women in crisis pregnancies who feel coerced or pressured toward abortion, that the Church may stand with them — offering the cloak as well as the tunic — so that no mother feels she must choose between her child and her own survival, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.For all who have been hurt by abortion — mothers, fathers, families — that those who minister to them may go the extra mile in compassion and healing, meeting them where they are without judgment, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For children lost to abortion, that Christ who gave himself without resistance for the life of the world may hold them forever in the life that no one can take away, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For sidewalk counsellors and all who serve in front-line pro-life ministry, that they may embody Christ's patient, non-retaliatory love.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, including the unborn, may rest in the embrace of the one who went infinitely further than the extra mile for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
