Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Wednesday, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.For the Church, that she may always present Christ as the fulfillment of all that God promised — not an abolisher of the Law but its perfection — and so draw both Jews and Gentiles to the fullness of truth, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For world leaders, that they may respect the moral law written on every human heart, recognising that not the smallest letter of God's truth passes away, no matter what human authority decrees, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who have been told that Christian morality is outdated or abolished, that they may hear Christ say 'I have come not to abolish but to fulfill' and find in his teaching a liberating perfection, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may take seriously both the obeying and the teaching of God's commandments, knowing that faithfulness in small things is the measure of greatness in the Kingdom of heaven, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For the faithful departed, that they who sought to obey and hand on God's word in their lives may now enjoy the Kingdom Christ promised to those who fulfil the Law in love, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For Scripture scholars and theologians, that they may see Christ as the key to every page of the Old and New Testaments.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may be called great in the Kingdom of heaven by the one who fulfilled every letter of God's promise, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all teachers of the faith, that they may hand on the whole counsel of God — not picking and choosing — trusting that not the smallest part of God's word will ever pass away, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That nations may build their legal systems on the enduring foundation of natural and divine law, rather than the shifting sands of cultural preference or political majority, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who find the demands of the Gospel too difficult, that they may ask Christ to fulfill his Law within them through grace, for what is impossible for us alone is possible with God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may both practice and teach the commandments of God, understanding that witness and instruction together build the Kingdom, and that we are accountable for both, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may be a community faithful to the whole of Scripture, formed by its wisdom and sent to embody the Law fulfilled in Christ, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those in RCIA and faith formation, that they may come to love the fullness of Catholic moral and doctrinal teaching.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may receive the reward Christ promised to those who kept and taught his commandments, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.For the Church, that she may proclaim that God's commandment 'Do not kill' — not one letter of it — has been abolished by any court ruling or legislative act, and that every unborn life is protected by divine law, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That legislators may understand that human laws which contradict God's law on the sanctity of life do not abolish that law — they merely put themselves in opposition to it, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers in crisis who feel trapped by circumstances, that they may find in the Church not condemnation but the fulfillment of law in love — mercy, support, and a community that walks with them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.For all who teach the sanctity of human life in schools, parishes, and families, that they may do so with the authority of one who knows this truth comes not from opinion but from God himself, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For children lost to abortion and for their parents, that the God who keeps every letter of his promises may bring them the mercy, healing, and eternal life that no human law can grant or withhold, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who defend the dignity of life in law, medicine, and public policy, that they may be strengthened by the permanence of God's truth.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, including the unborn, may inherit the Kingdom promised to those who fulfil the Law of love, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
