Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Wednesday, 8th Week in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.For the Church, that she may always proclaim the two great commandments as the heart of Christian life: love of God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love of neighbor as ourselves, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For world leaders, that they may govern with genuine love for those they serve, not from ambition or self-interest, but from dedication to the common good, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who feel burdened by rules and obligations, that they may discover the freedom of the two great commandments which sum up all the Law and the Prophets, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may hear Christ's words — 'You are not far from the Kingdom of God' — as an invitation to take one more step in love, closing whatever distance remains between us and him, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For the faithful departed, who strove to love God and neighbor, that they may now be welcomed into the Kingdom which Christ promised is near to those who love truly, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those who find it hard to love: themselves, their neighbor, or God — that grace may open what is closed in their hearts.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may enter the Kingdom that belongs to those who loved God above all things, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all teachers of the faith, that they may present the commandments not as a burden but as the shape of love: God first, neighbor always, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all peoples may come to know the God who is one, and learn from his Son the only two commandments needed to order a just and peaceful world, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those trapped in legalism or moralism, that they may encounter Jesus who honors sincere seeking — 'You answered wisely' — and draws every honest heart toward the Kingdom, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may examine our daily lives through the lens of these two commandments: do I love God with everything I have? Do I love my neighbor as myself? let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that our community life may be built entirely on love of God and neighbor, making every other rule and program flow from these two foundations, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For catechists and parents, that they may teach the faith as love, not merely as law.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may be found close to the Kingdom they sought on earth, and welcomed into it forever, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.For the Church, that the commandment to love neighbor as oneself may impel her to defend every unborn neighbor, whose life begins at conception, with the same passion she would defend her own, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may be moved by love of neighbor to protect children in the womb through just laws, recognizing that love of the weakest is the measure of love for all, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For women in unplanned or crisis pregnancies, that they may be loved as neighbors by their communities — accompanied, supported, and never abandoned in their hour of need, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That all who work in pro-life ministry may be motivated by the two great commandments: love of God who authors every life, and love of neighbor, born and unborn, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For children lost to abortion and for their parents, that the God whose commandment is love may bring justice and healing, and draw all who grieve into his merciful embrace, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For mothers who chose life under great pressure, that their love for their child may be honored and supported.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, including the unborn, may be received into the Kingdom promised to those who loved God and neighbor, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
