Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Thursday, 8th Week in Ordinary Time

Option 1

1.For the Church, that she may imitate Bartimaeus and cry out to Christ without ceasing: 'Son of David, have pity on us!' — especially in times when the world urges her to be silent, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.For world leaders, that like Jesus who stopped when one blind man cried out, they may pause from the rush of affairs to attend to the needs of the most overlooked, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For all who are blind — physically, spiritually, or emotionally — that they may hear Christ asking them: 'What do you want me to do for you?' and dare to name their deepest need, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may throw aside whatever cloak of comfort or self-protection holds us back from running to Christ, and follow him without reserve on the way, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For the faithful departed, that they who followed Christ on the way may now behold him face to face in the light that no blindness can dim, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those who feel ignored or silenced in their suffering, that the voice of Christ may single them out by name.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may hear the Lord say 'Courage! Get up,' and rise to eternal life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV and all who proclaim Christ, that they may always stop for the one who cries out, as Jesus stopped for Bartimaeus, making each person feel seen and loved, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That governments may hear the cries of the poor and marginalized — those who call from the roadside of society — and respond with justice and compassion, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those struggling with addiction, depression, or deep loneliness, that they may cry out with Bartimaeus's persistence and find that Jesus is already calling them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That our faith may be as bold and active as Bartimaeus's — not passive waiting but an urgent cry, a casting off of all that hinders, a leap toward Christ, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our parish, that we may be a community that encourages one another to call out to Jesus, and that never tells the suffering to be quiet, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those preparing for Baptism or Confirmation, that their eyes of faith may be fully opened by Christ.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may receive the sight that Bartimaeus received, beholding God in eternal light, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.For the Church, that she may never silence the cry of the unborn for life — as many tried to silence Bartimaeus — but hear it and bring it before Christ who is Lord of life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may stop and truly hear the plea of children in the womb, and enact laws that protect every life from conception to natural death, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For women in crisis pregnancies who feel silenced and alone, that they may cry out for help and find a community that takes off their burden, walks beside them, and leads them to Christ, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.For all who work in pregnancy resource centers, that they may hear the cries of mothers in need as Jesus heard Bartimaeus, responding with immediacy and love, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For children lost to abortion and for their parents, that Bartimaeus's healer — who restores sight and saves by faith — may bring them the healing and mercy only he can give, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who advocate for the unborn, that they may not grow weary but cry out with Bartimaeus's perseverance.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed, including the unborn, may receive the gift of sight in the eternal light of God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
