Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

Variations if Feast is not celebrated

Option 1

1.That the Church, standing in the 'little while' between Christ's departure and his return in glory, may keep vigil with hope—knowing that grief is already being transformed into joy through the resurrection, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may govern with the wisdom of those who know the present moment is not the final word—that grief can become joy and darkness give way to the light Christ promised, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who weep and mourn while the world rejoices—the persecuted, the bereaved, the marginalized—that Christ's promise may sustain them: 'your grief will become joy,' let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may live faithfully in the 'little while'—the in-between time of Christ's ascension and return—trusting that we will see him again and that no one will take our joy from us, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish may be a community of Easter hope that lives toward Christ's return, neither despairing at what the world celebrates nor forgetting that the Lord who went away is coming back, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For those in our community who are grieving—the recently bereaved, the lonely, the heartbroken—that Christ's promise may bring them consolation.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all the faithful departed may have discovered that their grief has been transformed into the joy no one can take away—the joy of seeing the Lord face to face, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For Pope Leo XIV, that as he guides the Church in the 'little while' of Christ's absence from visible sight, the Spirit may remind him that the Lord is coming and that grief will become joy, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That all humanity may hear the promise that is the antidote to every despair: 'your grief will become joy'—spoken by the one who went through death and came out the other side in resurrection, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who are confused by their suffering, asking like the disciples 'what does this mean?'—that the patience of Christ with their questions may be their comfort until joy replaces grief, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may not be troubled by the 'little while'—the times when we do not see God clearly or feel his presence—but trust the pattern Christ reveals: departure, grief, and then joy beyond taking, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.For our local church, that as we prepare for the feast of the Lord's Ascension, we may live with the forward-looking hope of those who know their grief is temporary and their joy is coming, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who are in a season of spiritual dryness or darkness, that the 'little while' may give way to the light Christ promises.Lord, hear our prayer.
That N. and all who have died may have moved from the grief of this 'little while' into the eternal joy of seeing Christ face to face, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
