Understanding General Intercessions for Daily Mass

General intercessions, also known as the "Prayer of the Faithful" or "Universal Prayer," are an essential part of the Catholic Mass where the congregation joins together to pray for the needs of the Church and the world. These intercessions are called "general" because they address universal concerns that affect all Catholics and humanity as a whole.

General Intercessions for Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen, priest and martyr

Option 1

1.For the Church, that in the spirit of Saint Fidelis — who surrendered a career in law to preach the Gospel and died for it — she may count everything loss for the surpassing worth of knowing and proclaiming the Risen Christ, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawyers, judges, and all in the legal profession may be inspired by Fidelis to use their gifts for truth and justice rather than for gain, serving the vulnerable rather than the powerful, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who face professional, social, or legal consequences for their Christian faith, that the Easter conviction of Saint Fidelis — Catholic faith, mother of virtues — may sustain them through every cost, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may cultivate the Easter virtues Saint Fidelis embodied: fidelity, courage, and the willingness to stand for truth even when it is expensive, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish may honour the witness of Saint Fidelis by being a community that speaks clearly and lives consistently — whose faith is visible in the street as well as in the sanctuary, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, and all who have asked for our prayers.Lord, hear our prayer.
For N. and all the faithful departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For the Church, that martyrdom may never be for her a distant historical memory but a living reminder that the Easter faith is a truth people have died for — and that this truth deserves the same commitment from us in our generation, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That those who hold civil power may guarantee the freedom to preach, to teach, and to live the Gospel without intimidation — as Saint Fidelis was denied, and as many are denied today, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who find it costly to identify publicly as Christians in their workplace or community, that the Easter courage of the martyrs may strengthen them to remain faithful without becoming fearful, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may hear in Saint Fidelis's last words — Catholic faith, mother of virtues — an invitation to deepen our own Easter faith so that it becomes the source of every good thing we do, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish may be a community of fidelity — to Christ, to one another, and to those we are sent to serve — worthy of the name that echoes in today's saint, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who preach and teach the faith in hostile or difficult environments.Lord, hear our prayer.
For N. and all the faithful departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Variations if Optional Memorial is not celebrated

Option 1

1.For the Church, that she may proclaim the hard saying as well as the easy one — unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you have no life in you — trusting that the truth, however difficult, sets people free, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That world leaders may not flinch from difficult truths — how can this be? — but pursue what is real even when reality is demanding, governing with the courage that hard truth requires, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those who find this teaching hard, who are standing at the edge of leaving — that the Risen Christ may hold them through the difficulty and bring them to the other side of understanding, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may receive the Eucharist this week as true food and true drink — not symbolically but really — and let that reality transform us from the inside out, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish may take seriously the Eucharistic life — Adoration, frequent Communion, reverence at Mass — as the source from which all its Easter mission flows, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For our sick, bereaved, and all who have asked for our prayers.Lord, hear our prayer.
For N. and all the faithful departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Option 2

1.For the Church, that the promise of today's Gospel may shape her whole vision of the Eucharist: the one who eats me will live because of me — not merely remember, not merely commemorate, but live by the living God, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That civil authorities may recognise that the deepest human needs cannot be met by material provision alone — that human beings need true food and true drink that no government programme can supply, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For those whose spiritual hunger is acute — who are living without the Eucharist through isolation, illness, or distance from the Church — that Christ may reach them where they are and nourish them in ways beyond the sacramental, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may abide in Christ and let Him abide in us through the Eucharist — dwelling in the One who is himself the source of all Easter life, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish community may be visibly nourished and alive — a community whose Eucharistic life shows in the quality of its love, service, and welcome to all, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For a renewed reverence and hunger for the Eucharist in our parish.Lord, hear our prayer.
For N. and all the faithful departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.

Pro Life Option

1.That the Church may proclaim: my flesh for the life of the world — and see in every unborn body a life for which Christ gave his flesh, so that no unborn child may ever be treated as less than a person for whom God died, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
2.That lawmakers may not ask how can this be — dismissing the Church's teaching on life — but receive the evidence of human embryology and act with the seriousness it demands, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
3.For mothers who are hungry in every sense — financially, emotionally, spiritually — who cannot imagine sustaining another life when their own is so depleted, that the true food Christ promises may reach them through the hands of this community, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
4.That we may give our own flesh for the life of the world — our time, our money, our presence — for mothers and unborn children who have no one else to speak for them or provide for them, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
5.That our parish, nourished on the flesh and blood of the Risen Christ, may pour out that same self-giving love in every act of support for mothers, fathers, and children in our neighbourhood, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
Optional:For all who give themselves as true food for those in need — in food banks, shelters, and crisis centres.Lord, hear our prayer.
For N. and all the faithful departed, let us pray to the Lord.Lord, hear our prayer.
