“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you.” Christ’s peace is more than the absence of war: it is the fruit of justice, forgiveness and love, beginning in each human heart. Catholics pray for peace in the world, in families and in their own souls. Below are the Church’s traditional prayer for peace, the Prayer of St. Francis, prayers for world peace and for the Holy Land, a prayer for peace of mind, a prayer for our enemies, and the Scripture behind them.
The Church’s prayer for peace
This ancient antiphon, Da pacem, Domine (“Give peace, O Lord, in our days”), with the Church’s collect for peace, as printed in Father Lasance’s With God (1911):
Give peace, O Lord, in our days; for there is none other that fighteth for us, but only Thou, our God.
V. Let there be peace in Thy strength, O Lord.
R. And plenty in Thy strong places.
Let us pray
O God, from Whom proceed all holy desires, all right counsels and just works; grant unto us Thy servants that peace which the world can not give, that our hearts may be devoted to Thy service, and that, being delivered from the fear of our enemies, we may pass our time in peace under Thy protection. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Prayer of St. Francis
The best-known prayer for peace in the world, translated from its 1912 French original:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, may I put love.
Where there is offense, may I put forgiveness.
Where there is discord, may I put unity.
Where there is error, may I put truth.
Where there is doubt, may I put faith.
Where there is despair, may I put hope.
Where there is darkness, may I put your light.
Where there is sadness, may I put joy.
O Lord, may I seek not so much
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
for it is in giving that we receive,
in forgetting ourselves that we find,
in forgiving that we are forgiven,
in dying that we rise to eternal life.
See the Prayer of St. Francis for its history.
A prayer for world peace
Written for this page:
God of peace, look upon our wounded world.
Where there is war, bring an end to the fighting;
where there is hatred, soften hearts;
where there is injustice, raise up people who work for what is right.
Protect the innocent, comfort refugees and all who mourn,
and give wisdom to leaders, that they may choose the way of peace.
Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us. Amen.
A prayer for peace in the Holy Land and the Middle East
Lord Jesus, you were born in Bethlehem, you walked the roads of Galilee
and you wept over Jerusalem.
Look with mercy on all the peoples of the land you loved.
Stop the violence, free the hostages and prisoners, feed the hungry,
heal the wounded and console the bereaved.
Give Jews, Christians and Muslims the courage to live together in justice and peace. Amen.

Pray ye for the things that are for the peace of Jerusalem: and abundance for them that love thee.
Let peace be in thy strength: and abundance in thy towers.
For the sake of my brethren, and of my neighbours, I spoke peace of thee.
A prayer for peace of mind
Lord, my thoughts are restless and my heart is troubled.
Quiet the noise within me and give me your peace,
the peace the world cannot give.
Help me to trust you with what I cannot control
and to do today, calmly, what you ask of me. Amen.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.
A prayer for our enemies
Peace begins with forgiveness. From Blessed Be God (1925):
O God, the lover and preserver of peace and charity: grant unto all our enemies peace and true charity; give them remission of all their sins, and by Thy power deliver us from their snares. Amen.
A prayer for peace in the family
Lord, bring peace to our home.
Where we have hurt one another, give us the grace to say sorry and to forgive.
Make us patient, gentle and kind,
and let our family be a place where everyone feels loved. Amen.

Scripture on peace
And he shall judge the Gentiles, and rebuke many people: and they shall turn their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into sickles: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they be exercised any more to war.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.
What the Church teaches about peace
“Respect for and development of human life require peace. Peace is not merely the absence of war… Peace is ‘the tranquillity of order.’ Peace is the work of justice and the effect of charity” (CCC 2304). The Church observes a World Day of Peace on January 1 each year, with a message from the Pope, and has long prayed to Mary as Queen of Peace.
