Catholic Prayers for Family: For Protection, Unity, Marriage and Hard Times

The Church calls the Christian family “a domestic church,” a little church at home where faith, hope and love are learned and lived (CCC 2204). Praying for your family, and with your family, is the surest way to keep it close to God. On this page you will find a traditional Catholic prayer for a family and home, prayers to the Holy Family of Nazareth, the Church’s old prayers for a household and for peace among its members, and a prayer for husband and wife. Short prayers written for this guide cover unity, hard times, a family member far from God and a grieving family. Practical ideas for praying together close the page.

A traditional prayer for a Christian family

Pope Leo XIII attached an indulgence to this prayer in 1889, and Father Lasance printed it in With God (1911). It entrusts the home, everyone in it and “all that we possess” to God, through Jesus, Mary, St. Joseph and the angels.

God of goodness and mercy, we commend to Thy all-powerful protection our home, our family, and all that we possess. Bless us all as Thou didst bless the Holy Family of Nazareth.

O Jesus, our most holy Redeemer, by the love with which Thou didst become man in order to save us, by the mercy through which Thou didst die for us upon the cross, we entreat Thee to bless our home, our family, our household. Preserve us from all evil and from the snares of men; preserve us from lightning and hail and fire, from flood, and from the rage of the elements; preserve us from Thy wrath, from the hatred and the evil designs of our enemies, from plague, famine, and war. Let not one of us die without the holy sacraments. Bless us, that we may bravely confess that faith by which we are sanctified, that we may never falter in our hope, even amid pain and affliction, and that we may ever grow in love for Thee and in charity toward our neighbor. O Jesus, bless us, protect us.

O Mary, Mother of grace and mercy, bless us, protect us against the evil spirit; lead us by the hand through this vale of tears; reconcile us with thy divine Son; commend us to Him, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

St. Joseph, reputed father of Our Saviour, guardian of His most holy Mother, head of the Holy Family, intercede for us, bless and protect our home always.

St. Michael, defend us against all the malice of hell.

St. Gabriel, obtain for us that we may ever seek the holy will of God.

St. Raphael, preserve us from ill health and all danger to life.

Holy guardian angels, keep us day and night in the way to salvation.

Holy patrons, pray for us before the throne of God.

Bless this house, Thou, God our Father, Who didst create us; Thou, divine Son, Who didst suffer for us on the cross; Thou, Holy Spirit, Who didst sanctify us in baptism. May God, in His three divine persons, preserve our bodies, purify our souls, direct our hearts, and lead us to life everlasting.

Glory be to the Father, glory be to the Son, glory be to the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Prayers to the Holy Family

Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived as a real family in Nazareth, with work, worry, poverty and love. Catholics ask their help for every family. This short prayer was also indulgenced by Leo XIII:

Grant us, O Lord Jesus, faithfully to imitate the examples of Thy Holy Family, so that in the hour of our death, in the company of Thy glorious Virgin Mother and St. Joseph, we may deserve to be received by Thee into eternal tabernacles.

The Feast of the Holy Family is kept on the Sunday after Christmas. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, December 27. Many families renew their consecration to the Holy Family that day. See also the St. Joseph prayer, for St. Joseph is the head of the Holy Family and patron of fathers.

The Church’s prayer for a household

This ancient prayer asks Mary’s intercession for “this thy family.” In old prayer books it is said “for a congregation or family,” so a parish family can use it too:

Defend, we beseech thee, O Lord, by the intercession of the blessed Mary, ever Virgin, this thy family from all adversity; and mercifully protect us, now prostrate before thee with our whole hearts, from all the snares of our enemies. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer for peace and unity in the family

When there is tension at home, this short prayer asks God, “the giver of peace and lover of charity,” for true concord:

O God, who art the giver of peace and lover of charity, grant to thy servants true concord and union with thy holy will, that we may be delivered from all temptations which assault us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer for family unity

This prayer was written for this guide.

Lord Jesus, you prayed that all your disciples would be one.
Make our family one in love.
Heal what is broken between us,
teach us to listen before we speak,
to forgive quickly and to say sorry first.
Let our home be a place of peace. Amen.

A prayer for husband and wife

Moran’s 1883 prayer book gives this prayer for a married person. It asks God to bless the union, keep the couple in “peace and love,” and deliver them from anything that could “weaken or embitter” their bond:

O God, who hast ordained and sanctified the holy estate of matrimony, for replenishing the earth, for mutual consolation, and as a type of the union of Christ and his Church; give me grace both thankfully to accept its blessings, and carefully to fulfil its duties. I beseech thee continually to bless our union, and to enable us to live together in peace and love, in the faithful discharge of all our duties to thee, and to each other. Deliver us from every evil temper, from every heedless action, which may in any way weaken or embitter the sacredness of that tie by which thou hast bound us together, and which can never be severed. Make me faithful and affectionate, studious to please, and ready to deny my own will and inclination in all things. Let not the trials and crosses of this life induce me to murmur, nor any earthly blessings cause me to forget thee, the Author and Giver of all; but by patience and meekness, by prayer and thankfulness, may all things be sanctified unto me, and fit me for eternal union with thee, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Scripture for families

Psalm 128 (127): the blessing of a God-fearing home

Blessed are all they that fear the Lord: that walk in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labours of thy hands: blessed art thou, and it shall be well with thee.
Thy wife as a fruitful vine, on the sides of thy house. Thy children as olive plants, round about thy table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.
May the Lord bless thee out of Sion: and mayest thou see the good things of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
And mayest thou see thy children’s children, peace upon Israel.

“As for me and my house” (Joshua 24:15)

But if it seem evil to you to serve the Lord, you have your choice: choose this day that which pleaseth you, whom you would rather serve, whether the gods which your fathers served in Mesopotamia, or the gods of the Amorrhites, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.

For our parish family

Lord, bless our parish family:
our priests and deacons, our families and those who live alone,
the sick, the newcomers and the forgotten.
Make us one family around your altar. Amen.

How to pray together as a family

“Daily prayer and the reading of the Word of God strengthen it in charity,” the Catechism says of the family (CCC 2205). For young children especially, “daily family prayer is the first witness of the Church’s living memory” (CCC 2685). Start small:

  • Grace before meals. Say it every day, even when eating out. See Catholic grace before meals.
  • Night prayers. A Sign of the Cross, a word of thanks, an Act of Contrition and a blessing for each child. See Catholic night prayers.
  • One decade of the Rosary. Venerable Patrick Peyton’s motto was “The family that prays together stays together.” Our interactive Rosary guides you bead by bead.
  • Sunday Mass together, then talk over the readings at lunch.
  • A prayer corner with a crucifix, an image of Mary, a candle and a Bible.
  • The seasons of the Church year, such as an Advent wreath or Christmas crib prayers.
  • Consecrate your home to the Sacred Heart or the Holy Family, using the Litany of the Sacred Heart.

Frequently asked questions

What is a powerful Catholic prayer for family?

The traditional “Prayer for a Christian Family” above, the Rosary prayed together, and the Mass offered for your family are among the most powerful. You can also request a Mass intention for your family.

Who is the patron saint of families?

St. Joseph, as head of the Holy Family. Catholics also pray to the Holy Family as a whole, to Sts. Joachim and Anne (Mary’s parents, patrons of grandparents), and to Sts. Louis and Zélie Martin, the parents of St. Thérèse, canonized together in 2015.

How can I pray for my family when we are not close?

Pray for each person by name every day, ask nothing in return, and let God work. Small gestures of kindness are often the answer to that prayer.
