Catholic Prayer for a Job: Prayers to St. Joseph for Work, Interviews and Unemployment

When you are looking for work, Catholics turn above all to St. Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth who provided for the Holy Family by the work of his hands. The Church honors him as St. Joseph the Worker on May 1. Below are the traditional prayer to St. Joseph for workers, prayers before a job interview, for those who are unemployed and for a new job, with Scripture to sustain your trust while you search.

Prayer to St. Joseph the Worker

This prayer, indulgenced by Pope St. Pius X in 1907, asks St. Joseph’s help to work faithfully and well. It is from Father Lasance’s With God (1911):

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins;
to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my inclinations;
to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God;
to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties;
to work, above all, with purity of intention, and with detachment from self, having always death before my eyes and the account which I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after thy example, O patriarch Joseph.
Such shall be my watchword in life and in death.
Amen.

A prayer for finding a job

Written for this page:

St. Joseph, you worked with your hands to provide for Jesus and Mary.
I need work to support myself (and my family).
Guide me to the right job, open doors that are closed,
and help me to use the gifts God has given me.
While I wait, keep me from discouragement and fear,
and help me to trust in the Father who feeds the birds of the air. Amen.

A prayer before a job interview

Holy Spirit, give me calm and clear thinking in this interview.
Help me to speak honestly about my gifts and my limits,
to listen well and to make a good impression.
If this job is right for me, open the way; if not, lead me to something better.
St. Joseph, pray for me. Amen.

A prayer for the unemployed

Lord, you know the worry and shame that come with losing work.
Comfort all who are unemployed, especially (name).
Give them strength, hope and practical help,
and move employers to treat workers with justice. Amen.

O God, our refuge and strength, the author of all godliness, give ear to the fervent prayers of thy Church; that what we ask in faith we may effectually obtain. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer of thanks for a new job

Thank you, Lord, for this new work.
Help me to do it well, to be honest and kind with my colleagues,
and to find you in my daily tasks. Amen.

Scripture for those looking for work

Be not solicitous therefore, saying, What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed?
For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.
Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.

Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it.
