St. Barbara Prayer: Prayers for Protection, a Happy Death and St. Barbara’s Day

St. Barbara, a virgin and martyr of the early Church, is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and has been invoked for centuries against storms, fire and sudden death. Miners, firefighters, artillery soldiers and all who work in danger count her as their patron, and Catholics ask her prayers for the grace to receive the sacraments before death. Below is the traditional prayer to St. Barbara for a happy death from The Raccolta, prayers for protection in storms and dangerous work, the custom of St. Barbara’s branches on December 4, and her story.

The traditional prayer to St. Barbara for a happy death

St. Barbara is often painted holding a chalice and the Host, because she is invoked by those who wish to receive Holy Communion and the last sacraments before they die. From The Raccolta (1910):

O God, who didst choose St. Barbara to bring consolation to the living and the dying; grant that through her intercession we may live always in thy divine love, and place all our hopes in the merits of the most sorrowful Passion of thy Son; so that a sinner’s death may never overtake us, but that, armed with the Sacraments of Penance, the Holy Eucharist, and Extreme Unction, we may be able to pass without fear to everlasting glory. We implore this of Thee through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer to St. Barbara for protection

Written for this page:

St. Barbara, faithful virgin and martyr,
you trusted God when your own father turned against you.
Protect me and my family from every danger:
from storms and lightning, from fire and explosion,
from accidents and sudden death.
Above all, keep us in God’s grace,
so that we may always be ready to meet him. Amen.

A prayer for those who work in danger

St. Barbara, patron of miners, firefighters and soldiers,
watch over all who risk their lives in their work, especially (name).
Bring them home safely at the end of each day,
give them courage and good judgment,
and comfort their families while they wait. Amen.

A prayer in a storm

St. Barbara, pray for us in this storm.
Lord, calm the wind and the rain,
protect our home and all who are in danger,
and give us peace. Amen.

St. Barbara’s branches

In Germany, Austria and other parts of Central Europe, families cut a branch from a cherry tree or another flowering tree on December 4, St. Barbara’s Day, and put it in water indoors. If all goes well, it blossoms at Christmas, a sign of new life in the dark of winter and of Christ born from the “root of Jesse.” Children love to watch for the first buds through Advent. Some families write a wish or an intention for each branch.

Scripture for St. Barbara

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery:
And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace.

The story of St. Barbara

Little is known for certain about St. Barbara, and her story comes from accounts written several centuries after her death. According to the legend, she was the beautiful daughter of a wealthy pagan named Dioscorus, who shut her in a tower to keep her from suitors. While he was away she became a Christian and had a third window built in the bathhouse he was building, in honor of the Holy Trinity. When her father discovered her faith, he denounced her to the authorities. She was tortured and condemned, and her father himself beheaded her, after which he was struck by lightning and killed. That is why she is invoked against lightning, fire and sudden death.

Devotion to St. Barbara spread widely in the East and the West in the Middle Ages, and she became one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Because of the doubts about her historical record, her memorial was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969, but she remains in the Roman Martyrology on December 4, and her feast is still kept in many places and in the Eastern Churches.
