Prayer to St. Joseph for a Job: St. Joseph the Worker Prayer for Work and Employment

St. Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth who worked with his hands to support Jesus and Mary, is the patron saint of workers and the saint Catholics turn to when they need a job. Pope St. Pius X wrote a beautiful prayer to St. Joseph “model of all those who are devoted to labor,” and Pope Pius XII established the feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1. Below are prayers to St. Joseph for a job, for employment and for your work: the prayer of Pius X, the Memorare to St. Joseph, a short daily prayer for a job, a nine-day novena, and Scripture. As Pharaoh told the hungry people of Egypt about another Joseph: “Go to Joseph.”

A short prayer to St. Joseph for a job, written for this page:

St. Joseph, you worked hard to provide for Jesus and Mary.
You know what it is to need work and to worry about tomorrow.
Help me to find a good job where I can support my family, use my gifts and serve others. Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph the Worker (Pope St. Pius X)

Composed by Pope St. Pius X and indulgenced by him in 1907, this is the classic prayer to St. Joseph for work:

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins;
to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my inclinations;
to work with gratitude and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God;
to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, without ever recoiling before weariness or difficulties;
to work, above all, with purity of intention, and with detachment from self, having always death before my eyes and the account which I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after thy example, O patriarch Joseph.
Such shall be my watchword in life and in death.
Amen.

The Memorare to St. Joseph

Remember, O most pure spouse of the blessed Virgin Mary, my sweet protector, St. Joseph!
that no one ever had recourse to thy protection or implored thy aid without obtaining relief.
Confiding therefore in thy goodness, I come before thee, and humbly supplicate thee.
Oh, despise not my petitions, foster-father of the Redeemer, but graciously receive them.
Amen.

A daily prayer for a job

Written for this page.

St. Joseph, today I am looking for work: (name the job or interview).
Open the right doors and close the wrong ones.
Give me patience while I wait, confidence when I speak, and trust in God’s providence. Amen.

Before a job interview

St. Joseph, be with me in this interview.
Help me to be calm, honest and clear, and to show the gifts God has given me.
If this job is good for me, obtain it for me; if not, lead me to a better one. Amen.

In thanksgiving for a new job

St. Joseph, thank you for your help. I have found work!
Help me to do my job well, to be fair with others, and to offer my work to God every day. Amen.

A nine-day novena to St. Joseph for a job

For nine days, pray the prayer of Pius X above, the Memorare to St. Joseph, and the short daily prayer, followed by an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be. Many begin on a Wednesday, the day dedicated to St. Joseph, or before his feasts on March 19 and May 1. See the St. Joseph novena.

Leo XIII’s prayer to St. Joseph

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction and, after imploring the help of thy most holy spouse, we confidently invoke thy patronage also.
By that affection which united thee to the immaculate virgin Mother of God, and by the fatherly love with which thou didst embrace the infant Jesus, look down, we beseech thee, with gracious eyes on the precious inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and help us in our necessities by thy powerful intercession.
Protect, O most provident guardian of the Holy Family, the elect children of Jesus Christ;
ward off from us, O most loving father, every contagion of error and corrupting influence;
be propitious to us from heaven, O most powerful protector, in this our struggle with the powers of darkness;
and as thou didst once rescue the child Jesus from the greatest peril to His life, so now defend God’s holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity.
Finally, shield every one of us with thy patronage, that, imitating thy example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting happiness in heaven.
Amen.

Scripture

“Go to Joseph” (Genesis 41:55, Douay-Rheims):

And when there also they began to be famished, the people cried to Pharao for food. And he said to them: Go to Joseph: and do all that he shall say to you.

Jesus, “the carpenter’s son” (Matthew 13:55, Douay-Rheims):

Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Jude:

Psalm 89:17 (Douay-Rheims; Psalm 90 in other numberings):

And let the brightness of the Lord our God be upon us: and direct thou the works of our hands over us; yea, the work of our hands do thou direct.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the patron saint of finding a job?

St. Joseph, the worker of Nazareth. St. Cajetan is also invoked by the unemployed.

When is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker?

May 1. Pope Pius XII established it in 1955, so that workers would have a heavenly patron on the day many countries celebrate labor.

Why do Catholics say “Go to Joseph”?

Because in Genesis, Pharaoh sent the starving people to Joseph, who had stored grain for Egypt; the Church applies these words to St. Joseph, the guardian of the Holy Family’s bread.
