Catholic wedding prayers surround the bride and groom with prayer as they enter the sacrament of Matrimony: prayers for the couple, prayers the bride and groom can say on their wedding morning, prayers for their parents, a blessing for the newlyweds, and a grace for the wedding reception. At the heart of every Catholic wedding are the Church’s own prayers: the exchange of consent, the blessing of rings and the Nuptial Blessing. Below are prayers you can use before, during and after the wedding, the traditional prayer of a husband or wife, the prayer of Tobias and Sara from the Bible, and Scripture. For the order of the ceremony and the readings, see the Catholic wedding guide.
A short prayer for the couple, written for this page:
Lord, bless (bride) and (groom) on their wedding day.
Unite them in a love that is faithful, fruitful and joyful,
and be the third strand in the cord of their marriage, all the days of their life. Amen.
A prayer for the bride and groom on their wedding morning
Written for this page, to pray together or separately before the ceremony.
Lord Jesus, today I give myself to (name) before you and your Church.
Calm my nerves, fill my heart with gratitude,
and help me to keep the promises I will make today, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. Amen.
The prayer of Tobias and Sara
The most famous wedding prayer in the Bible, prayed by Tobias and Sara on their wedding night (Tobias 8:7–10, Douay-Rheims):
And Tobias said: Lord God of our father, may the heavens and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains, and the rivers, and all thy creatures that are in them, bless thee.
Thou madest Adam of the slime of the earth, and gavest him Eve for a helper.
And now, Lord, thou knowest, that not for fleshly lust do I take my sister to wife, but only for the love of posterity, in which thy name may be blessed for ever and ever.
Sara also said: Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, and let us grow old both together in health.
A traditional prayer of a husband or wife
From a Catholic prayer book of 1883, a prayer the newlyweds can make their own:
O God, who hast ordained and sanctified the holy estate of matrimony, for replenishing the earth, for mutual consolation, and as a type of the union of Christ and his Church; give me grace both thankfully to accept its blessings, and carefully to fulfil its duties. I beseech thee continually to bless our union, and to enable us to live together in peace and love, in the faithful discharge of all our duties to thee, and to each other. Deliver us from every evil temper, from every heedless action, which may in any way weaken or embitter the sacredness of that tie by which thou hast bound us together, and which can never be severed. Make me faithful and affectionate, studious to please, and ready to deny my own will and inclination in all things. Let not the trials and crosses of this life induce me to murmur, nor any earthly blessings cause me to forget thee, the Author and Giver of all; but by patience and meekness, by prayer and thankfulness, may all things be sanctified unto me, and fit me for eternal union with thee, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
A prayer for the parents of the couple
Lord, today our son (daughter) begins a new family.
Thank you for the years we had them in our home.
Bless their marriage, help us to support them without interfering, and let our two families become one in love. Amen.
A blessing for the newlyweds
May God the Father bless your love. May Jesus Christ, who changed water into wine at Cana, fill your home with joy.
May the Holy Spirit keep you faithful to each other and to him. And may you see your children’s children. Amen.
A grace for the wedding reception
Bless us, O Lord, and this feast, and the hands that prepared it.
Bless (bride) and (groom) as they begin their life together,
and let all of us gathered here share their joy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Scripture for a wedding
Genesis 2:18–24 (Douay-Rheims):
And the Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone: let us make him a help like unto himself.
And the Lord God having formed out of the ground all the beasts of the earth, and all the fowls of the air, brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: for whatsoever Adam called any living creature the same is its name.
And Adam called all the beasts by their names, and all the fowls of the air, and all the cattle of the field: but for Adam there was not found a helper like himself.
Then the Lord God cast a deep sleep upon Adam: and when he was fast asleep, he took one of his ribs, and filled up flesh for it.
And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: and brought her to Adam.
And Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.
Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh.
Ruth’s promise (Ruth 1:16–17, Douay-Rheims), often read as a vow of faithful love:
She answered: Be not against me, to desire that I should leave thee and depart: for whithersoever thou shalt go, I will go: and where thou shalt dwell, I also will dwell. Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.
The land that shall receive thee dying, in the same will I die: and there will I be buried. The Lord do so and so to me, and add more also, if aught but death part me and thee.
