When you face a decision, feel lost, or simply want to know what God is asking of you, Catholic tradition offers prayers for guidance: Scripture’s promises that God will show us the way, prayers to the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of counsel, and St. John Henry Newman’s “Lead, Kindly Light,” written when he was sick and far from home. Below are a short prayer for guidance, Newman’s prayers, Scripture for discernment, prayers for specific decisions, and simple steps for discerning God’s will.
A short Catholic prayer for guidance, written for this page:
Lord, I do not know which way to go, but you know me and you know the way.
Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind, calm my heart and guide my steps.
Show me your will, and give me the courage to follow it. Amen.
“Lead, Kindly Light”
St. John Henry Newman wrote this prayer in 1833, becalmed on a ship in the Mediterranean, homesick and unsure of his future:
Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene, one step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor pray’d that Thou
Shouldst lead me on.
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on,
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
“God has created me to do Him some definite service”
From Newman’s meditations, a prayer of trust for anyone wondering about their vocation or purpose:
God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission — I never may know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. Somehow I am necessary for His purposes, as necessary in my place as an Archangel in his — if, indeed, I fail, He can raise another, as He could make the stones children of Abraham. Yet I have a part in this great work; I am a link in a chain, a bond of connexion between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good, I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments and serve Him in my calling.
Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be necessary causes of some great end, which is quite beyond us. He does nothing in vain; He may prolong my life, He may shorten it; He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends, He may throw me among strangers, He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide the future from me — still He knows what He is about.
O Adonai, O Ruler of Israel, Thou that guidest Joseph like a flock, O Emmanuel, O Sapientia, I give myself to Thee. I trust Thee wholly. Thou art wiser than I—more loving to me than I myself. Deign to fulfil Thy high purposes in me whatever they be — work in and through me. I am born to serve Thee, to be Thine, to be Thy instrument. Let me be Thy blind instrument. I ask not to see — I ask not to know — I ask simply to be used.

Scripture for guidance
God’s word as a lamp (Psalm 118:105, Douay-Rheims; Psalm 119 in other numberings):
Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my paths.
God’s promise to instruct us (Psalm 31:8, Douay-Rheims; Psalm 32 in other numberings):
I will give thee understanding, and I will instruct thee in this way, in which thou shalt go: I will fix my eyes upon thee.
Trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5–6, Douay-Rheims):
Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence.
In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps.
Ask for wisdom (James 1:5, Douay-Rheims):
But if any of you want wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men abundantly, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
“This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaias 30:21, Douay-Rheims):
And thy ears shall hear the word of one admonishing thee behind thy back: This is the way, walk ye in it: and go not aside neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
The Spirit of truth (John 16:13, Douay-Rheims):
But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself; but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak; and the things that are to come, he shall shew you.

Prayers for guidance in specific decisions
Written for this page.
Before a big decision
Holy Spirit, Spirit of counsel, I bring you this decision: (name it).
Help me to see clearly, to weigh honestly, to listen to wise advice,
and to choose what is most pleasing to God. Amen.
For a job or career
Lord, guide me to work where I can use my gifts, provide for my family and serve others.
Close the doors that are not for me and open the right one. Amen.
For a vocation
Lord, what do you want me to do with my life?
Whether you call me to marriage, priesthood, religious life or single life,
give me a generous heart to say yes. Amen.
For a relationship
Lord, guide me in this relationship. Help me to see it with your eyes,
to love wisely, and to choose what leads us both closer to you. Amen.
How to discern God’s will
- Pray first. Bring the decision to God before anyone else, and ask the Holy Spirit for light. See the Come Holy Spirit prayer.
- Read Scripture and stay faithful to the Church’s teaching; God never leads us against His commandments.
- Seek wise counsel from a priest, spiritual director or trusted friend.
- Notice peace. St. Ignatius of Loyola taught that lasting peace and joy usually accompany the right choice, while anxiety and confusion often point away from it. See the daily Examen.
- Decide and trust. After praying and reflecting, make a choice and entrust it to God.
