Catholic tradition dedicates Tuesday to the holy angels: the guardian angel God gives to each of us and the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. A Tuesday morning prayer asks them to guard our steps through the day. Here is a Tuesday morning prayer, a short version, a verse for the morning and Tuesday’s traditional devotion.
A Tuesday morning prayer
Written for this page:
Heavenly Father, thank you for this new day and for the angels you send to watch over us.
My guardian angel, stay beside me today:
protect me on the road, at work and at home,
keep me from danger to body and soul, and whisper good thoughts to me when I am tempted.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
Saint Raphael, accompany those who travel and those who are sick;
Saint Gabriel, help me to hear God’s word and say yes to it.
Guard my family and all those I love, today and always. Amen.
A short Tuesday morning prayer
For mornings when there is no time:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, stay at my side today and guide me in God’s ways. Amen.
A verse for Tuesday morning
Psalm 90:11 (Psalm 91:11 in most modern Bibles), Douay-Rheims Bible:
For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways.
This is the verse behind the Church’s belief in guardian angels, quoted by Jesus himself when he spoke of the angels of the little ones (Matthew 18:10).
Tuesday’s devotion: the holy angels
Tuesday is dedicated to the holy angels.
- Pray the Guardian Angel prayer (“Angel of God, my guardian dear”) on your way out the door.
- Pray the Prayer to St. Michael for protection against evil.
- For a longer devotion, the Chaplet of St. Michael honors the nine choirs of angels.
A five-minute Tuesday morning routine
- Wake up with God: before reaching for your phone, make the Sign of the Cross and say “Good morning, Lord.”
- Offer the day: pray the Morning Offering or the Tuesday prayer above.
- Read the verse for Tuesday slowly, twice, and keep one phrase for the day.
- Pray one decade of the Rosary with the first of the Sorrowful Mysteries.
- Name your intention: on Tuesdays many Catholics pray especially for protection for your family, travelers and drivers, and those in danger.
Five minutes is enough; what matters is beginning the day with God every day.
