Sunday Morning Prayer: A Catholic Prayer for the Lord’s Day

Sunday is the Lord’s Day, the day of the Resurrection, and the heart of every Catholic week is Sunday Mass. Catholic tradition also dedicates Sunday to the Most Holy Trinity. A Sunday morning prayer prepares the heart for Mass, for rest and for family. Here is a Sunday morning prayer, a short version, a verse for the morning and Sunday’s traditional devotion.

A Sunday morning prayer

Written for this page:

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Lord Jesus, on the first day of the week you rose from the dead:
this morning I rejoice in your Resurrection.
Prepare my heart for Mass: open my ears to your Word,
make me ready to receive you, and unite me with my brothers and sisters in faith.
Bless this day of rest; let me spend it with you and with my family,
and send me into the new week renewed. Amen.

A short Sunday morning prayer

For mornings when there is no time:

This is the day the Lord has made: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I praise you and I give you this Sunday. Amen.

A verse for Sunday morning

Psalm 117:24 (Psalm 118:24 in most modern Bibles), Douay-Rheims Bible:

This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us be glad and rejoice therein.

The Church sings this verse on Easter Sunday, and every Sunday is a little Easter.

Sunday’s devotion: the Most Holy Trinity

Sunday is dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity and celebrates the Resurrection of Christ.

  • Sunday Mass: the first precept of the Church is to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. See this week’s Sunday Mass readings.
  • Pray the Glory Be slowly, or the Te Deum, the Church’s great hymn of praise.
  • Keep the day holy: rest, family, works of mercy.

A five-minute Sunday morning routine

  1. Wake up with God: before reaching for your phone, make the Sign of the Cross and say “Good morning, Lord.”
  2. Offer the day: pray the Morning Offering or the Sunday prayer above.
  3. Read the verse for Sunday slowly, twice, and keep one phrase for the day.
  4. Pray one decade of the Rosary with the first of the Glorious Mysteries.
  5. Name your intention: on Sundays many Catholics pray especially for your parish, those who cannot go to Mass, and the coming week.

Five minutes is enough; what matters is beginning the day with God every day.

The Rosary on Sunday

On Sundays the Rosary is prayed with the Glorious Mysteries: see the Rosary for Sunday.
