Father’s Day is not a feast of the Church’s calendar, but many parishes remember fathers at Mass on that Sunday and bless them at the end of Mass. In the United States and many other countries it falls on the third Sunday of June: June 20, 2027. Below are four sets of Prayers of the Faithful for Father’s Day: for fathers, for grandfathers and godfathers, for fathers who have died, and a set children can read. Add one or two of these intentions to the intentions for the Sunday.
Response: Lord, hear our prayer.
How to use these intercessions
The Sunday Mass and readings are those of the day; Father’s Day intentions are added to the Universal Prayer (GIRM 69–71). Choose two or three of the following, and keep the usual order: the Church, the world, those in need, the local community.
Set 1: For all fathers
Priest: On this Father’s Day, let us pray to God the Father, from whom every fatherhood in heaven and on earth takes its name.
- For all fathers, that like St. Joseph they may protect, provide for and guide their families with faith and tenderness, let us pray to the Lord.
- For new fathers and fathers-to-be, that God may give them wisdom, patience and joy, let us pray to the Lord.
- For fathers who are unemployed, ill or far from their families, that they may find help and hope, let us pray to the Lord.
- For fathers who struggle with addiction, anger or broken relationships, that they may find healing and reconciliation, let us pray to the Lord.
- For our parish, that we may honor and support the fathers among us, let us pray to the Lord.
- For all fathers who have died, that they may rest in the peace of our heavenly Father, let us pray to the Lord.
Priest: Heavenly Father, bless all fathers with your love and strength. Hear our prayers, and make our families reflect your goodness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Set 2: Grandfathers, godfathers and spiritual fathers
- For grandfathers, that they may pass on the faith and the wisdom of their years to their grandchildren, let us pray to the Lord.
- For godfathers, stepfathers and all men who act as fathers to children, that God may bless their care, let us pray to the Lord.
- For priests, our spiritual fathers, that they may be faithful and loving shepherds, let us pray to the Lord.
- For children who have no father, or who have been hurt by their father, that God may heal them and send them good men to guide them, let us pray to the Lord.
Set 3: For fathers who have died
- For our fathers and grandfathers who have died, that they may receive the reward of their labors, let us pray to the Lord.
- For all who are grieving the death of their father this year, that they may be comforted, let us pray to the Lord.
- For fathers who died far from home, in war or in their work, that they may rest in peace, let us pray to the Lord.
Set 4: For children to read
- For our dads, that God may bless them and keep them healthy, let us pray to the Lord.
- For our grandpas, that they may be happy and know we love them, let us pray to the Lord.
- For dads who are far away or in heaven, let us pray to the Lord.
- For us, that we may listen to our dads and help them, let us pray to the Lord.
