Our Father in Italian (Padre Nostro): Traditional Text, the 2020 Version and Translation

The Our Father in Italian is the “Padre nostro,” which begins “Padre nostro, che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome”: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” In 2020, with the new Italian Missal, the Italian bishops changed two lines: “come anche noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori” and “non abbandonarci alla tentazione,” “do not abandon us to temptation,” in place of “non ci indurre in tentazione.” Below is the traditional text from the 1905 catechism of Pope St. Pius X, the changes in today’s version, a pronunciation guide, a line-by-line translation, and the English Our Father.

The Padre Nostro (traditional)

From Pius X, Compendio della dottrina cristiana (Rome, 1905):

Today’s version

The Padre Nostro prayed at Mass today differs in a few places:

  • “che sei nei cieli” (modern spelling of “ne’ cieli”) and “sia santificato il tuo nome,” “venga il tuo regno,” “sia fatta la tua volontà.”
  • “come anche noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori,” with “anche” (“also”) added in 2020.
  • “e non abbandonarci alla tentazione” (“and do not abandon us to temptation”), introduced in 2020 in place of “e non ci indurre in tentazione.”
  • “ma liberaci dal male. Amen.”

Amen.

The full traditional text is above.

Why did the Italian Our Father change in 2020?

Pope Francis and the Italian bishops wanted to avoid the impression that God leads people into temptation, so “non ci indurre in tentazione” became “non abbandonarci alla tentazione.”

What is the Apostles’ Creed in Italian?

The “Credo” in the same 1905 catechism:

Patì sotto Ponzio Pilato: fu crocifisso, morto e sepolto.
Credo nello Spirito Santo.
