Novena to the Holy Family: Nine Days of Prayer for Your Family With Jesus, Mary and Joseph

A novena to the Holy Family is nine days of prayer to Jesus, Mary and Joseph for your own family: for unity, peace, faith, health, a hard situation at home, or a child or spouse who is struggling. This novena follows the Holy Family through the Gospels, from the journey to Bethlehem to the hidden life at Nazareth, and closes each day with the Church’s traditional prayer to imitate their example. It is especially fitting before the Feast of the Holy Family, the Sunday after Christmas (beginning around December 18), but you can pray it at any time. Below are how to pray it and the nine days.

A short prayer to the Holy Family, written for this page:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I entrust my family to you.
Bring us peace, keep us together in love and faith,
and help us in this need: (name your intention). Amen.

How to pray the novena

  1. If you can, gather your family, even for a few minutes, and make the Sign of the Cross.
  2. Read the Gospel passage of the day.
  3. Pray the daily prayer and name your intentions for the family.
  4. Close with the prayer to the Holy Family below, and “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I give you my heart and my soul.”

Closing prayer (every day)

Grant us, O Lord Jesus, faithfully to imitate the examples of Thy Holy Family, so that in the hour of our death, in the company of Thy glorious Virgin Mother and St. Joseph, we may deserve to be received by Thee into eternal tabernacles.

The nine days

Day 1: The journey to Bethlehem

(Luke 2:4–7, Douay-Rheims):

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David,
To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.
And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Holy Family, you had no room in the inn. Be with families who are homeless, poor or far from home. Amen.

Day 2: Joseph’s obedience

(Matthew 1:20–21, Douay-Rheims):

But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.
And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.

St. Joseph, you trusted God’s plan for your family. Help fathers to lead their families with faith. Amen.

Day 3: The flight into Egypt

(Matthew 2:13–14, Douay-Rheims):

And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him.
Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod:

Holy Family, you were refugees in a foreign land. Protect migrant and refugee families. Amen.

Day 4: The Presentation in the Temple

(Luke 2:22–24, Douay-Rheims):

And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:
As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord:
And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons:

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help us to offer our children to God and raise them in faith. Amen.

Day 5: Growing in grace

(Luke 2:39–40, Douay-Rheims):

And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth.
And the child grew, and waxed strong, full of wisdom; and the grace of God was in him.

Child Jesus, bless all children, and help them to grow strong in body and in grace. Amen.

Day 6: Lost and found in the Temple

(Luke 2:46–49, Douay-Rheims):

And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions.
And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers.
And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father’s business?

Mary and Joseph, you knew the anguish of losing a child. Pray for parents worried about their children, and bring the lost home. Amen.

Day 7: The hidden life at Nazareth

(Luke 2:51–52, Douay-Rheims):

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.
And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.

Holy Family of Nazareth, make our home a place of prayer, work, kindness and peace. Amen.

Day 8: Honor your father and mother

(Ecclesiasticus 3:3–7, Douay-Rheims):

For God hath made the father honourable to the children: and seeking the judgment of the mothers, hath confirmed it upon the children.
He that loveth God, shall obtain pardon for his sins by prayer, and shall refrain himself from them, and shall be heard in the prayer of days.
And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up a treasure.
He that honoureth his father shall have joy in his own children, and in the day of his prayer he shall be heard.
He that honoureth his father shall enjoy a long life: and he that obeyeth the father, shall be a comfort to his mother.

Lord, bless parents and grandparents, and give children grateful and respectful hearts. Amen.

Day 9: The bond of charity

(Colossians 3:12–15, Douay-Rheims):

Put ye on therefore, as the elect of God, holy, and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience:
Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any have a complaint against another: even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also.
But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection:
And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, heal what is broken in our family, teach us to forgive one another, and grant our intention if it is God’s will. Amen.
