Catholic Birthday Prayers: Blessings for Yourself, a Child, Mother, Father or Friend

A birthday is a day to thank God for the gift of life. The Psalmist prays, “I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works,” and on a birthday Catholics thank God for the person he has made, ask his blessing for the year ahead, and entrust the one celebrating to his care.

Below are Catholic birthday prayers and blessings for every person in your life: for yourself, a child, a mother or father, a husband or wife, a friend, a grandparent and a priest, with Bible verses for birthday cards and simple ways to celebrate a birthday with faith. All of these prayers were written for this page unless a source is given, and you are welcome to copy them into a card or a message.

A birthday prayer for yourself

Lord God, thank you for the gift of my life
and for every day you have given me until now.
Thank you for the people who love me, for the joys of this past year
and even for its difficulties, which taught me to trust you.
Forgive me for the times I wasted your gifts.
As I begin a new year of life, guide my steps,
keep me close to you, and make me a blessing to others.
Into your hands I place this year. Amen.

A birthday blessing for anyone

The oldest blessing in the Bible, which God gave to Aaron and his sons to bless the people, makes a perfect birthday blessing:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
Say to Aaron and his sons: Thus shall you bless the children of Israel, and you shall say to them:
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee.
The Lord shew his face to thee, and have mercy on thee.
The Lord turn his countenance to thee, and give thee peace.
And they shall invoke my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

You can adapt it as a personal blessing: May the Lord bless you and keep you, (name). May he show his face to you and have mercy on you. May he turn his face toward you and give you peace. Parents often trace a small cross on their child’s forehead as they say it.

Bible verses for a birthday

For a birthday card or a family prayer, these verses from the Douay-Rheims Bible celebrate the gift of life:

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well.
My bone is not hidden from thee, which thou hast made in secret: and my substance in the lower parts of the earth.
Thy eyes did see my imperfect being, and in thy book all shall be written: days shall be formed, and no one in them.

Before I formed thee in the bowels of thy mother, I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee, and made thee a prophet unto the nations.

The mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed: because his commiserations have not failed.
They are new every morning, great is thy faithfulness.

Other favorites: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and never forget all he hath done for thee” (Psalm 102:2) and “Every best gift, and every perfect gift, is from above” (James 1:17).

How to celebrate a birthday the Catholic way

  • Start with thanksgiving. Pray a prayer of thanks together at breakfast or before the birthday cake.
  • Have a Mass offered for the person’s intentions, or go to Mass together on the day. See Mass intentions.
  • Give a parent’s blessing. Trace a cross on the forehead and pray the blessing of Numbers 6.
  • Remember the baptism day too. Many Catholic families celebrate the anniversary of baptism, the day of new birth in Christ, with a candle and a small treat.
  • Celebrate the name day. If the person is named after a saint, celebrate the saint’s feast as well; find it on the saint of the day calendar.
  • Bless the birthday cake. Before the candles are blown out, ask God to bless the food and the year ahead.

Frequently asked questions

What do Catholics say on a birthday?

Many simply say “Happy birthday” and “God bless you.” A beautiful Catholic wish is: “May God bless you and keep you in this new year of life,” or “I’ll pray for you today.”

Can I have a Mass said for someone’s birthday?

Yes. Ask at your parish office for a Mass to be offered for the person’s intentions, living or deceased. Many people give a Mass card as a birthday gift.

Is it Catholic to celebrate birthdays?

Yes. Life is a gift of God, and giving thanks for it is a Christian act. The Church celebrates the earthly birthdays of only Jesus, Mary and St. John the Baptist; the saints are celebrated on the day of their death, their “birthday into heaven,” which is why many Catholics also celebrate their baptism day and name day.

What is a good Bible verse for a birthday card?

Psalm 138:14 (Psalm 139 in modern Bibles), “I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works,” or the blessing of Numbers 6:24–26.
