St. Alphonsus Liguori Prayers: Prayer to St. Alphonsus and His Own Best-Loved Prayers

St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696–1787), founder of the Redemptorists and Doctor of the Church, wrote some of the best-loved prayers Catholics still say today, from the Act of Spiritual Communion to the Stations of the Cross. “He who prays is certainly saved,” he taught, and he spent his long life helping ordinary people to pray. Below are the traditional prayer to St. Alphonsus, his own prayers to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, to Jesus crucified and to Mary, the collect for his feast on August 1, and the story of his life.

Prayer to St. Alphonsus Liguori

This prayer was approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1887 and is printed in The Raccolta, the Church’s official collection of indulgenced prayers:

Glorious Saint Alphonsus, my most beloved protector, thou who hast laboured and suffered so much to secure to men the fruits of Redemption, behold the miseries of my poor soul, and have pity on me. Through thy powerful intercession with Jesus and Mary, obtain for me true repentance, together with the pardon of my past faults, a great horror of sin, and strength always to resist temptation. Impart to me, I pray thee, a spark of that ardent charity with which thy heart was ever inflamed; and grant that, imitating thee, I may make the good pleasure of God the only rule of my life. Obtain for me, moreover, a fervent and constant love for Jesus Christ, and a tender and filial devotion to his Mother Mary, together with the grace to pray always, and to persevere in the service of God until my death; so that I may at length join with thee in praising God, and the most Blessed Virgin Mary, for all eternity. Amen.

A short prayer to St. Alphonsus, written for this page:

St. Alphonsus, you never wasted a moment and never stopped praying.
Help me to pray every day, to trust in God’s mercy, and to love Jesus and Mary as you did.
St. Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us. Amen.

The collect for his feast

The prayer of the Mass of St. Alphonsus from the 1916 daily missal:

O God, who through the ardent zeal for souls of thy blessed Confessor and Bishop Alphonsus Mary didst enrich thy Church with a new order, we beseech thee that enlightened by his saving counsels and strengthened by his examples we may happily be enabled to come to thee. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God world without end. Amen.

Prayers written by St. Alphonsus

Act of Spiritual Communion

His best-known prayer, for anyone who cannot receive Holy Communion, whether at home, at a Mass they cannot attend, or in a state that keeps them from receiving:

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above everything, and I long for Thee in my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou wert already come, I embrace Thee and unite myself entirely to Thee; allow me not to be separated from Thee.

Prayer for a visit to the Blessed Sacrament

St. Alphonsus wrote Visits to the Most Holy Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary (1745), and this prayer opens each visit:

My Lord Jesus Christ, who for the love which Thou dost bear men dost remain night and day in this Sacrament, all full of tenderness and love, expecting, inviting, and receiving all those who come to visit Thee; I believe Thee present in the Sacrament of the Altar; I adore Thee in the depths of my own nothingness; and I thank Thee for all the graces which Thou hast granted me, especially for having vouchsafed to bestow thyself upon me in this Sacrament, for having given me thy own most holy Mother Mary for my advocate, and for having invited me to visit Thee in this church. I pay my homage this day to thy adorable Heart, and I do so for the following three intentions: first, in thanksgiving for this great gift itself; secondly, as a reparation for all the injuries which Thou hast received from all thy enemies in this Sacrament; thirdly, by this visit I intend to adore Thee in all those places where Thou, sacramentally present, art least reverenced and most abandoned. My Jesus, I love Thee with my whole heart. I repent of having so many times heretofore displeased thy infinite goodness. By thy grace I resolve never to offend Thee more for the time to come; and at this present moment, poor sinner as I am, I consecrate myself wholly to Thee. I renounce for myself, and I give to Thee, my will, my affections, my desires, everything that I call my own. From this day forth do Thou with me, and with everything that belongs to me, whatever pleases Thee. I ask Thee only, and I wish only, for thy holy love, for final perseverance, and the perfect fulfilment of thy will. I commend to Thee the souls in purgatory, especially those who were most devoted to the most holy Sacrament, and to Mary most holy. Moreover, I commend to Thee all poor sinners. For this intention, O my dear Saviour Jesus, I unite all my affections with the affections of thy most loving Heart; and thus united, I offer them to thy Eternal Father, and I entreat Him, in thy Name and for thy love, to accept and answer them.

Prayer to Mary before her image

From the author of The Glories of Mary. In this 1910 translation, “adore” is used in its old sense of deep reverence, not the worship given to God alone.

Most holy Mary, Immaculate Virgin and Mother, to thee who art the Mother of my Lord, the refuge of sinners, I, who am the most miserable of all, have recourse to-day. I adore thee, O great Queen, and I thank thee for the many favours thou hast done me up to now, especially for having preserved me from hell, which I have so often deserved. I love thee, most dear Lady; and by the love I bear thee I promise to desire ever to serve thee and to do all I can to make thee loved by others. I place all my hopes in thee, all my salvation. Accept me for thy servant and shelter me under thy mantle, O thou Mother of mercy. And since thou art so powerful with God, free me from all temptations, or obtain for me strength to overcome them as long as I live. Of thee I ask true love of Jesus Christ. Through thee I hope to die a good death. O Mother, by the love thou bearest to God, I pray thee to help me always, but specially in the last moment of my life. Do not leave me until thou seest me safe in Heaven, there to bless thee and sing thy mercies for all eternity. This is my hope. Amen.

Prayer to Jesus crucified, to obtain His holy love

St. Alphonsus recommended saying this prayer every day:

My crucified love, and my most sweet Jesus, I believe in Thee, and confess Thee to be true Son of God and Saviour of the world! I adore Thee from the abyss of my misery, and thank Thee for the death which Thou didst suffer, to obtain for me the life of divine grace. O most faithful of all friends! O most loving of all fathers! O kindest of all masters! my beloved Redeemer, to Thee I am indebted for my salvation, for my soul, my body, and my whole self. Thou hast delivered me from hell; through Thee I have received the pardon of my sins; through Thee do I hope for paradise. But my ingratitude is so great that, instead of loving Thee, after so many mercies and special endearments of love, I have only offended Thee afresh. I confess that I deserve not to be allowed to love Thee any more. But no, my Jesus! choose some other punishment for me, and not this. If I have despised Thee up to this time, now I love Thee, and I desire to love Thee with all my heart. Thou knowest very well that without Thy help I can do nothing. Since, then, Thou dost command me to love Thee, and dost offer me Thy grace, provided I ask it in Thy name, confiding in Thy goodness, and in the promise Thou hast made me, saying, Whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, that I will do, — I present myself, poor as I am, before the throne of Thy mercy; and by the merits of Thy Passion, I ask Thee first to pardon all my sins, of which I repent with all my soul, because by them I have offended Thee, who art infinite goodness. Pardon me, then, and at the same time, give me holy perseverance till death; grant me also the gift of Thy holy love.

Ah, my Jesus, my hope, and my only love! my life, my treasure, my all! shed over my soul that light of truth and that fire of love which Thou didst come to bring into the world. Enlighten me to know every day better why Thou shouldst be loved, and to see the immense love Thou hast shown me in suffering and dying for me. Ah, grant that the same love may be in me as that with which Thy eternal Father loves Thee. And as he is in Thee, and is one with Thee, so may I, by means of a true love, be in Thee, and, by a perfect union of will, become one with Thee. Grant me, then, O my Jesus, the grace of loving Thee with all my affections, that I may love Thee always, and ever beg the grace to love Thee; so that, ending my life in Thy love, I may come to love Thee in heaven with a purer and more perfect love, never to cease loving Thee, and to possess Thee for all eternity!

O Mother of beautiful love, most blessed Virgin, my advocate, my mother, my hope after Jesus, — who art of all creatures the most loving towards God, and desirest nothing but that he should be loved by all, — ah, for the love of this Son dying before thine eyes for my salvation, pray for me, and obtain for me the grace to love him always, and with all my heart! I ask it of thee, and from thee do I hope to obtain it. Amen.

Night prayer of St. Alphonsus

Jesus Christ, my God, I adore Thee and I thank Thee for all the graces Thou hast bestowed on me this day. I offer to Thee my sleep and every moment of this night, and I beseech Thee to keep me free from sin. To secure this I place myself within Thy sacred side and under the protecting mantle of Our Lady, my Mother. May Thy holy angels help me and keep me in peace, and may Thy blessing be upon me.

He also wrote a prayer to St. Teresa of Ávila, and the Stations of the Cross that most parishes still pray in Lent.

Who was St. Alphonsus Liguori?

Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, near Naples, into a noble family. He was brilliant: he earned his doctorate in civil and canon law at sixteen and became one of the most successful young lawyers in Naples. In 1723 he lost an important case through an oversight, and the humiliation opened his heart to God’s call. He left the law, was ordained a priest in 1726, and gave himself to preaching to the poor of the city and the abandoned country people.

In 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, to preach missions to the poorest and most neglected. In 1762, at sixty-six, he was made bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti, a poor diocese he served for thirteen years. In old age he suffered greatly: a painful illness bent his neck so that his chin pressed on his chest, and he endured misunderstandings within his own congregation. He died at Pagani on August 1, 1787, aged ninety.

St. Alphonsus wrote more than a hundred books, from his great Moral Theology, which taught confessors to be merciful, to popular works such as The Glories of Mary, Visits to the Most Holy Sacrament, Preparation for Death and Prayer, the Great Means of Salvation. He also wrote hymns, including the Italian Christmas carol “Tu scendi dalle stelle.” He was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871.

What is St. Alphonsus the patron saint of?

St. Alphonsus is the patron saint of confessors and moral theologians, named by Pope Pius XII in 1950. He is also the patron of the Redemptorists, who care for the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, and people with arthritis sometimes ask his help, since he lived for years with a crippling illness. People troubled by scruples also turn to him, since he suffered from them himself.

Feast day of St. Alphonsus

The memorial of St. Alphonsus Liguori is celebrated on August 1, the day of his death. Before 1969 it was kept on August 2. In 2027 August 1 falls on a Sunday, so the memorial is not celebrated at Mass that year.

To make a novena to St. Alphonsus, pray the prayer to St. Alphonsus above, with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be, each day from July 23 to July 31, adding your intention.
