A novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary is nine days of prayer asking Our Lady to intercede for us with her Son, as she did at the wedding at Cana. This novena walks through Mary’s life in nine passages of Scripture, from the promise in Genesis and the Annunciation to Pentecost and her glory in heaven, and each day ends with the Memorare, the prayer that reminds Mary that no one who fled to her protection was ever left unaided. You can pray it at any time, and especially before her feasts, such as the Assumption (August 15), her Birthday (September 8) or the Immaculate Conception (December 8). Below are how to pray the novena and the nine days.
A short prayer to the Blessed Mother, written for this page:
Mary, my Mother, you said yes to God and stood by your Son to the end.
I bring you my intention: (name your intention).
Take it to Jesus, as you did at Cana, and help me to do whatever He tells me. Amen.
How to pray the novena
- Make the Sign of the Cross.
- Read the Scripture of the day and think about it for a moment.
- Pray the short prayer of the day and name your intention.
- Pray the Memorare, below.
- If you have time, add a decade of the Rosary or the Hail, Holy Queen.
The Memorare (every day)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, and sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee I come; before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
The nine days
Day 1: The promise of the Woman
(Genesis 3:15, Douay-Rheims):
I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.
Immaculate Mary, conceived without sin, help me to fight against evil and to trust in God’s victory. Amen.
Day 2: The Annunciation
(Luke 1:28, 38, Douay-Rheims):
And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary, you said yes to God’s plan. Help me to say yes to His will in my life. Amen.
Day 3: The Visitation
(Luke 1:42, 46–48, Douay-Rheims):
And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Mary, you hurried to help Elizabeth. Make me quick to help others and to praise God. Amen.
Day 4: The Nativity
(Luke 2:19, Douay-Rheims):
But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.
Mary, Mother of God, teach me to treasure God’s word in my heart as you did. Amen.
Day 5: The sword of sorrow
(Luke 2:34–35, Douay-Rheims):
And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted;
And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.
Mother of Sorrows, stay with me and with all who suffer. Amen.
Day 6: The wedding at Cana
(John 2:3–5, Douay-Rheims):
And the wine failing, the mother of Jesus saith to him: They have no wine.
And Jesus saith to her: Woman, what is that to me and to thee? my hour is not yet come.
His mother saith to the waiters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.
Mary, you noticed when the wine ran out. Tell Jesus what I need, and help me to do whatever He tells me. Amen.
Day 7: At the foot of the Cross
(John 19:25–27, Douay-Rheims):
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.
When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.
After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.
Mary, from the Cross Jesus gave you to me as my Mother. Take me into your heart. Amen.
Day 8: With the apostles at Pentecost
(Acts 1:14, Douay-Rheims):
All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Mary, Mother of the Church, pray with us for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Day 9: Queen of Heaven
(Apocalypse 12:1, Douay-Rheims):
And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars:
Mary, assumed into heaven and crowned as Queen, bring my intention to your Son, and lead me one day to share your glory. Amen.
Closing prayer: Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy! Hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us.
And after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
