On the anniversary of a death, Catholics do more than remember: we pray for the one we love, trusting that our prayers help them and that we will meet again. The Church has always kept the anniversaries of the faithful departed, above all by offering Mass for them. Below are the Church’s traditional prayer for an anniversary, prayers for a parent, a spouse or a child, a prayer to say at the grave, how to have a Mass offered, and short messages for the day.
The traditional anniversary prayer
This is the Church’s ancient prayer for the anniversary of a death, as given in Archbishop Moran’s Catholic Prayer Book (1883):
O Lord, the God of mercy and pardon, grant to the soul of thy servant N. whose anniversary we commemorate, the seat of refreshment, the happiness of rest, and the brightness of light: through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Another traditional prayer, from Blessed Be God (1925):
We beseech Thee, O Lord, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to grant fellowship with Thy saints and elect to the soul of Thy servant, N., whose departure we commemorate, and mayest Thou pour upon it the everlasting dew of Thy mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Then pray:
Eternal rest grant unto him (her), O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him (her).
May he (she) rest in peace. Amen.
A prayer on the anniversary of my mother’s or father’s death
Lord, today we remember my mother (father), (name),
who gave me life and taught me to know you.
Thank you for every year we shared, for her (his) love and sacrifices.
Forgive whatever is still to be forgiven,
and bring her (him) into the joy of your presence.
Help me to honor her (his) memory by the way I live. Amen.

Scripture for an anniversary
But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery:
And their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace.
Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.
Have a Mass offered on the anniversary
The greatest prayer for the dead is the Mass. “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice” (CCC 1032). Contact your parish a few weeks before the anniversary and ask for a Mass intention for your loved one; the family can then attend that Mass together. See Mass intentions for the dead and Mass cards.
Anniversary customs vary around the Catholic world. Irish families keep a “month’s mind” Mass a month after the death and an anniversary Mass each year; in Mexico the first anniversary Mass is the misa de cabo de año; in the Philippines the first anniversary traditionally ends the period of mourning. For the Prayers of the Faithful at an anniversary Mass, see Prayers of the Faithful for a first death anniversary and for a death anniversary.

Frequently asked questions
What do Catholics do on a death anniversary?
They have a Mass offered for the deceased, attend Mass as a family, visit and pray at the grave, and often gather for a meal to share memories.
Should we still pray for someone who died many years ago?
Yes. We do not know how long purification takes, and no prayer is wasted: if our loved one no longer needs it, Catholics trust that God applies it to other souls in need.
What is the prayer for the first death anniversary?
Any of the prayers above, especially the Church’s anniversary prayer, a Mass offered for the deceased, and the Eternal Rest prayer.
