Christmas Eve Prayer and Blessing: Catholic Prayers for December 24

Christmas Eve is the night of waiting: Advent ends, the Christ Child is placed in the manger, and the Church gathers for the first Mass of Christmas. Below is a Christmas Eve prayer you can say tonight, a Christmas Eve blessing for your family and home, a prayer for placing the baby Jesus in the Nativity scene, a blessing for the Christmas Eve dinner, short Christmas Eve blessings to send, and the Church’s own prayers for the vigil and Midnight Mass. In 2026, Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24.

A Christmas Eve prayer, written for this page:

Lord Jesus, tonight the long wait is over.
As Mary and Joseph searched for a place to lay you, we open the door of our home and our hearts.
Come into the noise and the rush of this evening and fill it with your peace.
Bless everyone gathered here, those who are traveling and those we will miss at the table.
Make us ready, like the shepherds, to hurry and find you, and to go home glorifying God. Amen.

A Christmas Eve blessing for your family

The head of the household or another family member leads; everyone else answers. Written for this page.

Leader: The Word was made flesh, alleluia.
All: And dwelt among us, alleluia.

Leader: Loving Father, on this holy night you gave the world your only Son, born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem.
Bless our family as we wait to celebrate his birth.
Bless our home: may it be, like the stable of Bethlehem, poor in pride and rich in love.
Bless our table, our gifts and our conversations, and keep far from us every quarrel and every sadness.
Bless those who are not with us tonight, the living and the dead, and keep us all in your love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

Close by making the Sign of the Cross. Parents may then bless each child by tracing a small cross on the forehead.

Placing the baby Jesus in the manger

In many homes the manger stays empty until Christmas Eve. The youngest child carries the figure of the infant Jesus in procession, everyone singing Silent Night or O Come, All Ye Faithful, and places it in the crib. Then pray, written for this page:

Little Jesus, welcome to our home.
You came to us as a child, poor and small, so that we would not be afraid of you.
Stay with us, and teach us to make room for you every day of the year. Amen.

The blessing of the Nativity scene can be prayed now if the crib has not been blessed yet.

A Christmas Eve dinner blessing

Written for this page:

Bless us, O Lord, and this meal we share on the holy night of your coming.
Thank you for the hands that prepared it and the people who share it.
As you came to us in Bethlehem, the “house of bread,” come to us at this table,
and give bread to all who are hungry tonight. Amen.

Christmas Eve customs around the table:

  • Poland (Wigilia): the meal is meatless and begins when the first star appears. Before eating, everyone shares the opłatek, a thin wafer, breaking a piece from each other’s and exchanging wishes and forgiveness. An empty place is set for the unexpected guest.
  • Italy: many families keep the meatless “Feast of the Seven Fishes” and go to Midnight Mass afterward.
  • Mexico and Latin America (Nochebuena): the last posada is celebrated, the Child is laid in the manger, and the family dinner often follows Midnight Mass, the Misa de Gallo.
  • The Philippines (Noche Buena): the nine dawn Masses of Simbang Gabi end on Christmas Eve, and families gather for the Noche Buena feast after the night Mass.

Short Christmas Eve blessings

For cards, text messages or social media, written for this page:

  • May the peace of the first Christmas Eve fill your home tonight. Merry Christmas!
  • Tonight the Light comes into the world. May it shine on you and all you love.
  • As you wait for Christmas morning, may the Child of Bethlehem find room in your heart.
  • God bless you this Christmas Eve, and keep you safe on every road home.
  • May the angels’ song “Glory to God in the highest” ring in your house tonight.
  • Wishing you a holy Christmas Eve and a Christmas full of grace.
  • May the love that came down at Christmas warm your table and your heart.
  • Thinking of you on this silent, holy night. You are in my prayers.

The Church’s prayers for Christmas Eve

The vigil: the Mass of the Vigil of Christmas is celebrated on the evening of December 24. Its traditional collect, in the 1916 English translation:

Let us pray: O God, who makest us glad in looking forward year by year to our Redemption, grant that we who joyfully hail thine only begotten Son for our Redeemer, may with full confidence behold him when he shall come to be our Judge, the same our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Midnight Mass: the first Mass of Christmas itself, celebrated during the night. Its traditional collect:

Let us pray: O God, who hast made this most sacred night to shine forth from the brightness of the true light, grant, we beseech thee, that we may enjoy in heaven his happiness, the mystery of whose light we have known upon earth. Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

These prayers make a fitting grace for the Christmas Eve meal or a closing prayer before bed. The prayers of the other two Christmas Masses are on our Christmas Day prayer page.

A prayer before Midnight Mass

Written for this page:

Lord, I have come in the middle of the night, as the shepherds did.
Quiet my thoughts, still my worries and open my heart to the mystery of your birth.
As you come to us on the altar under the appearance of bread, let me receive you with the love of Mary and the faith of Joseph. Amen.

A bedtime prayer for children on Christmas Eve

Dear Jesus, tomorrow is your birthday.
Thank you for coming to be our friend.
Bless Mommy and Daddy, my family and everyone who has no home tonight.
Help me to sleep and to wake up happy to celebrate you. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Does Christmas Eve Mass count for Christmas?

Yes. A Mass celebrated on the evening of December 24 fulfills the obligation to attend Mass for Christmas. See Christmas Mass 2026 for the four Christmas Masses and their times.

Is Christmas Eve a holy day of obligation?

No. The holy day is Christmas, December 25; the evening of December 24 is simply the first moment you can keep it.

Do Catholics have to fast or avoid meat on Christmas Eve?

Not anymore. Until the reforms of 1966 the Vigil of Christmas was a day of fast and abstinence, which is why many Polish and Italian families still keep a meatless Christmas Eve dinner. Today it is a beautiful custom, not an obligation.

What is a good Christmas Eve blessing for family?

Use the family blessing above before dinner or before leaving for Mass, then let each parent bless the children.
