Chaplet of the Holy Spirit: How to Pray It, with the Five Mysteries

The Chaplet of the Holy Spirit is a simple and beautiful way to ask for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, by meditating on five moments when the Spirit acts in the life of Jesus, the Church and our own souls. Each mystery is followed by seven Glory Bes, one for each gift. Below is how to pray it step by step, with the full text of the five mysteries from the Raccolta, the Church’s old collection of indulgenced prayers, and how it fits with the novena and the Pentecost season.

How to pray the Chaplet of the Holy Spirit

  1. Make the Sign of the Cross and pray the short act of contrition.
  2. Sing or say the hymn Come, Holy Ghost (Veni Creator Spiritus), with the versicle and the prayer.
  3. For each of the five mysteries, read the meditation and application, then pray the Our Father once, the Hail Mary once and the Glory Be seven times.
  4. End with the Apostles’ Creed, and one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intentions of the Pope.

That makes thirty-five Glory Bes in all. The chaplet beads have five groups of seven small beads, each group with two large beads before it. You can also count on your fingers. It takes about twenty minutes.

The opening prayers

Short act of contrition:

I grieve, O my God, for having sinned against Thee, because Thou art so good; and with the assistance of thy grace I will never sin again.

Hymn, Come, Holy Ghost (Veni Creator Spiritus):

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come,
From Thy bright, heavenly throne;
Come, take possession of our souls.
And make them all Thine own.

Thou Who art called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above;
The living spring, the living fire.
Sweet unction and true love.

Thou Who art sevenfold in Thy grace,
Finger of God’s right hand,
His promise, teaching little ones
To speak and understand.

Oh! guide our minds with Thy blest light.
With love our hearts inflame;
And with Thy strength, which ne’er decays,
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our hellish foe,
True peace unto us bring;
And through all perils lead us safe
Beneath Thy sacred wing.

Through Thee may we the Father know,
Through Thee, th’ eternal Son,
And Thee, the Spirit of them both —
Thrice-blessed Three in one.

All glory to the Father be,
And to His risen Son,
The like to Thee, great Paraclete.
While endless ages run.
Amen.

V. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

The versicle is from Psalm 103 (104):

Thou shalt send forth thy spirit, and they shall be created: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray:

O God, Who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolations, through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

The five mysteries

First Mystery: Jesus is conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

Meditation. “The Holy Spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall overshadow thee, and therefore the Holy one that shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God” (St. Luke i, 35).

Application. Pray earnestly for the help of the divine Spirit and, through the intercession of Mary, for grace to imitate the virtues of Jesus Christ, who is the example of all virtue, and so to be conformed to the image of the Son of God.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory Be seven times.

Second Mystery: The Spirit of God rests upon Jesus

Meditation. “Jesus being baptized came forth immediately from the water, and behold the Heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove, and coming, stand over Him” (St. Matt. iii, 16).

Application. Hold in the highest esteem the priceless gift of sanctifying grace, which the Holy Spirit infused into your heart in Baptism. Keep the promises to the observance of which you have bound yourself. By continual exercise, increase Faith, Hope and Charity. Live always as becomes children of God, and members of his true Church, in order that after this life has run its course, you may be worthy to receive your heavenly inheritance.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory Be seven times.

Third Mystery: Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert

Meditation. “But Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, retired from the Jordan, and was conducted by the Spirit into the desert for forty days; and was tempted by the Devil” (St. Luke iv, 1, 2).

Application. Be always grateful for the seven gifts given to you by the Holy Spirit in Confirmation; for the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and fortitude, of knowledge and piety, and of the fear of the Lord. Faithfully adhere to your divine Guide, acting manfully in all the dangers of this life and in temptation, as becomes a perfect Christian and a brave athlete of Jesus Christ.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory Be seven times.

Fourth Mystery: The Holy Spirit in the Church

Meditation. “And suddenly there was a sound from Heaven as of a mighty wind coming where they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to discourse of the wonderful works of God” (Acts ii, 2, 4, 11).

Application. Thank God for making you a child of his Church which the divine Spirit, sent into the world on the day of Pentecost, ever vivifies and rules. Hear and obey the Supreme Pontiff, who by the assistance of the Holy Spirit is the infallible teacher, and the Church, which is the pillar and foundation of truth. Hold fast her doctrines, maintain her cause, defend her rights.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory Be seven times.

Fifth Mystery: The Holy Spirit in the soul of the just

Meditation. “Do you not know that your members are the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you” (1 Cor. vi, 19).

“Do not extinguish the Spirit” (1 Thess. v, 19).

“And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephes. iv, 30).

Application. Be ever mindful of the Holy Spirit who is in you, and watch with all possible care over purity of soul and body. Faithfully obey his divine inspirations, so as to gather therefrom the fruits of the Spirit: Charity, joy, peace, benignity, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity.

Our Father and Hail Mary once, Glory Be seven times.

The closing

Pray the Apostles’ Creed as a profession of faith, then one Our Father and one Hail Mary for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Many people add this consecration to the Holy Spirit, indulgenced by Pope St. Pius X in 1908:

O Holy Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to Thee my understanding, heart, and will, my whole being for time and for eternity. May my understanding be always submissive to thy heavenly inspirations, and to the teachings of the Catholic Church, of which Thou art the infallible Guide; may my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of my neighbor; may my will be ever conformed to the divine Will, and may my whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to Whom with the Father and Thee be honor and glory forever. Amen.

Why seven Glory Bes?

The seven Glory Bes after each mystery honor the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit named in Isaias 11:2–3: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. These gifts are given in Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation, and the third mystery’s application asks us to be grateful for each of them. See the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

History of the chaplet

The chaplet comes from the late nineteenth century, when Pope Leo XIII encouraged devotion to the Holy Spirit; his encyclical Divinum illud munus (1897) asked the whole Church to pray a novena before Pentecost every year. The Raccolta of 1910 records that Leo XIII granted indulgences to the Chaplet of the Holy Spirit in 1902, including a plenary indulgence at Pentecost for those who pray it regularly.

When to pray it

  • Before Pentecost, especially during the nine days from Ascension to Pentecost, alongside the novena to the Holy Spirit.
  • Before Confirmation, by the candidate, sponsors and family.
  • Before decisions, exams, retreats and new beginnings.
  • On any day you need light, strength or peace.

Frequently asked questions

How many beads are on a Chaplet of the Holy Spirit?

Traditionally five groups of seven small beads for the Glory Bes, with two larger beads before each group for the Our Father and Hail Mary. Some chaplets also add beads or a medal for the opening and closing prayers.

Can I pray the Chaplet of the Holy Spirit without beads?

Yes. Count the seven Glory Bes on your fingers.

Is the Chaplet of the Holy Spirit the same as the novena?

No. The novena is prayed over nine days with a different prayer each day; the chaplet is a single prayer that can be prayed any day, and many people pray it daily during the novena.
