Confirmation Prayers: Catholic Prayers for Confirmation Candidates and Sponsors

Confirmation prayers call on the Holy Spirit, whom the confirmed receive in fullness when the bishop anoints them with chrism and says, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” Candidates prepare by praying for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit; sponsors, parents and parishes pray for them. Below are a prayer for confirmation candidates, the traditional “Come, Holy Ghost” and the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, prayers for sponsors and parents, a prayer for each of the seven gifts, Scripture, and short wishes for confirmation cards.

A short prayer for a confirmation candidate, written for this page:

Come, Holy Spirit, fill my heart.
As I prepare for Confirmation, give me your gifts of wisdom and courage,
and make me a faithful witness to Jesus Christ. Amen.

Come, Holy Ghost

The Church’s best-known prayer to the Holy Spirit, from a Catholic prayer book of 1883:

Come, O Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

V. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.

R. And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Veni Creator Spiritus

The ancient hymn to the Holy Spirit, sung at Confirmation and Pentecost, in an English translation from 1911:

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come,
From Thy bright, heavenly throne;
Come, take possession of our souls.
And make them all Thine own.

Thou Who art called the Paraclete,
Best gift of God above;
The living spring, the living fire.
Sweet unction and true love.

Thou Who art sevenfold in Thy grace,
Finger of God’s right hand,
His promise, teaching little ones
To speak and understand.

Oh! guide our minds with Thy blest light.
With love our hearts inflame;
And with Thy strength, which ne’er decays,
Confirm our mortal frame.

Far from us drive our hellish foe,
True peace unto us bring;
And through all perils lead us safe
Beneath Thy sacred wing.

Through Thee may we the Father know,
Through Thee, th’ eternal Son,
And Thee, the Spirit of them both —
Thrice-blessed Three in one.

All glory to the Father be,
And to His risen Son,
The like to Thee, great Paraclete.
While endless ages run.
Amen.

A prayer for the seven gifts

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit come from the prophecy of Isaias (Isaias 11:2–3, Douay-Rheims):

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness.
And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge according to the sight of the eyes, nor reprove according to the hearing of the ears.

Holy Spirit, give me wisdom to love what is good, understanding to grasp the faith,
counsel to choose rightly, fortitude to stand firm, knowledge to see things as you see them,
piety to love God as my Father, and fear of the Lord to never want to offend him. Amen.

Scripture for Confirmation

Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4, Douay-Rheims):

And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place:
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them:
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak.

The apostles lay hands on the baptized (Acts 8:14–17, Douay-Rheims):

Now when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John.
Who, when they were come, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost.
For he was not as yet come upon any of them; but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Then they laid their hands upon them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit (John 14:26, Douay-Rheims):

But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.
