Novena to the Precious Blood of Jesus: Nine Days With the Seven Offerings and Scripture

A novena to the Precious Blood of Jesus is nine days of prayer honoring the Blood that Christ shed for our salvation, from His agony in the garden to the Cross, and that He offers to the Father in every Mass. This novena joins, each day, a passage of Scripture on the Blood of Christ with the Seven Offerings of the Precious Blood, a prayer the Church has prayed and indulgenced since Pope Pius VII approved it in 1817. It is especially fitting in July, the month of the Precious Blood, before the old feast of the Precious Blood on July 1, during Lent, or in any time of need. Below are how to pray the novena, the Seven Offerings, and the nine days.

A short prayer to the Precious Blood, written for this page:

Precious Blood of Jesus, price of my salvation, wash me, heal me and protect me.
I place my intention in your wounds: (name your intention).
Blessed and praised forever be Jesus, who has saved us with His Blood. Amen.

How to pray the novena

  1. Choose a time each day for nine days, and make the Sign of the Cross.
  2. Read the Scripture for the day and pause for a minute in silence.
  3. Pray the Seven Offerings of the Precious Blood, below.
  4. Name your intention and close with the novena prayer of the day.

The whole prayer takes about ten minutes. Many people pray it before a crucifix.

The Seven Offerings of the Precious Blood

Pray these every day of the novena:

I. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for my dear mother, the holy Church, that she may enlarge her borders and be magnified in all the nations of the earth; for the safety and well-being of her visible head, the Sovereign Roman Pontiff; for the cardinals, bishops and pastors of souls, and for all the ministers of thy sanctuary.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
II. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for peace and union among all Catholic kings and princes, for the humiliation of the enemies of our holy faith, and for the welfare of all Christian people.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
III. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for the repentance of unbelievers, for the uprooting of heresy, and for the conversion of sinners.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
IV. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all my kindred, friends, and enemies; for the poor, the sick, and wretched, and for all for whom thou, my God, knowest that I ought to pray, or wouldst have me pray.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
V. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all who, this day, are passing to the other life; that thou wouldst save them from the pains of hell, and admit them quickly to the possession of thy glory.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
VI. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all those who love this great treasure, for those who join with me in adoring it and honoring it, and who strive to spread devotion to it.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
VII. Eternal Father! I offer thee the merit of the precious blood of Jesus, thy well-beloved Son, my Saviour and my God, for all my wants, spiritual and temporal, in aid of the holy souls in purgatory, and chiefly for those who most loved this blood, the price of our redemption, and who were most devout to the sorrows and pains of most holy Mary, our dear mother.
Glory be to the Father… Blessing and thanksgiving be to Jesus, who with his blood hath saved us.
Glory be to the blood of Jesus, now and forever, and throughout all ages. Amen.

The nine days

Day 1: The Blood of the New Covenant

Jesus at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:27–28, Douay-Rheims):

And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.
For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.

Lord Jesus, you gave us your Blood in the Eucharist. Make me always grateful for this gift. Amen.

Day 2: The agony in the garden

(Luke 22:43–44, Douay-Rheims):

And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer.
And his sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground.

Jesus, in your agony you sweat blood for my sins. Strengthen me in my own anguish. Amen.

Day 3: The pierced side

(John 19:34–35, Douay-Rheims):

But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.
And he that saw it, hath given testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true; that you also may believe.

Jesus, from your opened Heart flowed blood and water. Wash me and make me new. Amen.

Day 4: Redemption and forgiveness

(Ephesians 1:7, Douay-Rheims):

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace,

Precious Blood, price of my redemption, forgive my sins and set me free. Amen.

Day 5: Justified by His Blood

(Romans 5:8–9, Douay-Rheims):

But God commendeth his charity towards us; because when as yet we were sinners, according to the time,
Christ died for us; much more therefore, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from wrath through him.

Lord, you loved me while I was still a sinner. Let me never doubt your love. Amen.

Day 6: Peace through the Blood of the Cross

(Colossians 1:19–20, Douay-Rheims):

Because in him, it hath well pleased the Father, that all fulness should dwell;
And through him to reconcile all things unto himself, making peace through the blood of his cross, both as to the things that are on earth, and the things that are in heaven.

Jesus, by your Blood you made peace. Bring peace to my family and to the world. Amen.

Day 7: Cleansed from all sin

(1 John 1:7, Douay-Rheims):

But if we walk in the light, as he also is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Precious Blood, cleanse my heart and help me to walk in the light. Amen.

Day 8: Our eternal High Priest

(Hebrews 9:12–14, Douay-Rheims):

Neither by the blood of goats, or of calves, but by his own blood, entered once into the holies, having obtained eternal redemption.
For if the blood of goats and of oxen, and the ashes of an heifer being sprinkled, sanctify such as are defiled, to the cleansing of the flesh:
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who by the Holy Ghost offered himself unspotted unto God, cleanse our conscience from dead works, to serve the living God?

Jesus, eternal Priest, offer your Blood to the Father for me and for those I love. Amen.

Day 9: The Blood that speaks better than Abel’s

(Hebrews 12:22–24, Douay-Rheims):

But you are come to mount Sion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to the company of many thousands of angels,
And to the church of the firstborn, who are written in the heavens, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the just made perfect,
And to Jesus the mediator of the new testament, and to the sprinkling of blood which speaketh better than that of Abel.

Lord Jesus, your Blood pleads for mercy, not for vengeance. Grant my intention, if it is your will, and bring me one day to the heavenly Jerusalem. Amen.
