Patron Saint of Poland: Our Lady Queen of Poland, St. Stanislaus, St. Adalbert and the Polish Saints

Poland’s heavenly patrons are the Blessed Virgin Mary, honored as Queen of Poland in her icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, and two bishop-martyrs: St. Stanislaus of Szczepanów, bishop of Kraków, killed in 1079, and St. Adalbert of Prague, the missionary martyred in 997, whose relics rest in Gniezno. St. Andrew Bobola and St. Stanislaus Kostka are also among the patrons of Poland, and the twentieth century gave the country three of the best-known saints of modern times: St. Faustina, St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. John Paul II. The feast of Our Lady, Queen of Poland, is May 3. Below are the patrons of Poland, the prayer of St. Stanislaus’s feast, and prayers for Poland and for Polish families.

A short prayer for Poland, written for this page:

Mary, Queen of Poland, and all you holy patrons of Poland,
watch over the Polish nation at home and abroad.
Keep its faith strong, its families united and its people free. Amen.

Our Lady, Queen of Poland

Since 1382 the icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Black Madonna, has been kept by the Pauline monks at Jasna Góra. When the monastery held out against a Swedish siege in 1655, the nation saw it as a sign of Mary’s protection, and in 1656, in the cathedral of Lwów, King John II Casimir solemnly placed Poland under her care and proclaimed her Queen of the Polish Crown. The feast of Our Lady, Queen of Poland, is kept on May 3, and the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa on August 26. See Our Lady of Częstochowa.

St. Stanislaus of Szczepanów (April 11)

Stanislaus became bishop of Kraków in 1072. When he rebuked King Bolesław II for his cruelty and immorality and finally excommunicated him, the king, according to tradition, killed him with his own hand while he was celebrating Mass in a church outside the city in 1079. He was canonized in 1253 and became the principal patron of Poland; his relics rest in Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, where Polish kings were crowned. Pope St. John Paul II, who succeeded him as bishop of Kraków nine centuries later, loved to call him the patron of the moral order. The Church celebrates him on April 11 (in Poland, May 8).

The prayer of his feast from the 1916 daily missal:

O God, in whose honor the glorious Bishop Stanislaus fell by the sword of the impious, grant, we beseech thee, that all who implore his aid may obtain the saving benefit of their prayer. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God world without end. Amen.

St. Adalbert (April 23)

Adalbert (Wojciech) was a Czech nobleman who became bishop of Prague. Driven from his diocese, he went to Poland, where Duke Bolesław the Brave welcomed him and sent him to preach to the pagan Prussians on the Baltic coast. He was martyred there in 997. The duke bought back his body for its weight in gold and buried it at Gniezno, and in the year 1000 the emperor Otto III came on pilgrimage to his tomb, where the first archdiocese of Poland was founded. He is a patron of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
