St. Florian is the patron saint of firefighters: a Roman army officer who was martyred in 304 for refusing to give up his faith in Christ, and who, according to legend, once saved a burning town with a single bucket of water. For centuries Catholics have asked his protection against fire and flood, and today firefighters around the world wear his cross on their badges. His feast day is May 4, which is also International Firefighters’ Day. Below are prayers to St. Florian for firefighters and their families, for protection from fire and for firefighters who gave their lives, followed by his story.
A short prayer to St. Florian, written for this page:
St. Florian, you gave your life rather than deny Christ.
Protect all firefighters and those they rescue,
guard our homes from fire, and bring every crew home safely.
St. Florian, pray for us. Amen.

A firefighter’s prayer to St. Florian
Lord God, you call me to run toward danger when others run away.
Through the prayers of St. Florian, give me courage, a clear head and steady hands.
Keep my crew safe, help us reach every person in time,
and if it is your will, bring us all home to our families tonight.
St. Florian, patron of firefighters, pray for us. Amen.
For protection from fire
St. Florian, faithful soldier of Christ,
watch over our home and everyone in it.
Protect us from fire, lightning, smoke and flood,
keep us alert to danger, and keep our hearts burning only with the love of God. Amen.
For a firefighter’s family
Heavenly Father, every time the call comes, our hearts go with our firefighter.
Through the intercession of St. Florian, surround them with your angels,
give us peace while we wait, and bring them back to us safely. Amen.
For firefighters who died in the line of duty
Lord Jesus, you said that no one has greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.
Receive into your kingdom the firefighters who gave their lives for others.
Console their families and their crews, and grant them eternal rest. Amen.
The well-known poem “A Fireman’s Prayer” (“When I am called to duty, God…”) is a modern work, written in 1958, and is not reproduced here.
Scripture for firefighters
God’s promise to His people through the prophet Isaias (Isaias 43:2, Douay-Rheims; Isaiah in modern Bibles):
When thou shalt pass through the waters, I will be with thee, and the rivers shall not cover thee: when thou shalt walk in the fire, thou shalt not be burnt, and the flames shall not burn in thee.
And the words of Christ that firefighters live out (John 15:13):
Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Who was St. Florian?
Florian was an officer in the Roman army in the province of Noricum, in what is now Austria, stationed at Lauriacum (Lorch, near the town of Enns). Tradition says he was in charge of the soldiers who fought fires, and the legend of the burning town he saved with one bucket of water made him the protector against fire.
During the persecution of the emperor Diocletian, the governor Aquilinus began arresting Christians at Lauriacum. Florian, who was himself a Christian, went to the governor and openly confessed his faith. He refused to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods, was scourged, and on May 4, 304, was thrown into the River Enns with a stone tied around his neck. A Christian woman recovered his body and buried it; the great Augustinian Abbey of St. Florian near Linz stands over the place. The composer Anton Bruckner was organist there and is buried beneath its organ.
In 1184 Pope Lucius III gave relics of St. Florian to Kraków, and he became a patron of Poland. A young priest named Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope St. John Paul II, served at St. Florian’s Church in Kraków from 1949 to 1951.
What is St. Florian the patron saint of?
St. Florian is the patron saint of:
- Firefighters, and of protection against fire
- Chimney sweeps, brewers and soap makers

He is usually shown as a Roman soldier pouring a bucket of water over a burning house. The cross on many fire service badges is often called the St. Florian cross. In Austria an old joke prayer, “Holy St. Florian, spare my house, set the others alight!”, gave its name to the “St. Florian principle,” a nickname for “not in my backyard.”
