On November 9 the whole Church celebrates the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, the cathedral of the Pope as Bishop of Rome and, as an inscription on its façade proclaims, “the mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world.” It is the only dedication of a church celebrated as a feast throughout the Catholic world, a sign of every Catholic’s communion with the Church of Rome. In 2026 the feast falls on Monday, November 9. Below are the history of the basilica, the meaning of the feast, and the Scripture of the day.
The Pope’s cathedral
Many people assume St. Peter’s is the Pope’s cathedral, but it is not: St. Peter’s is a basilica built over Peter’s tomb. The Pope’s cathedral, where his cathedra or bishop’s chair stands, is the Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior and of Sts. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist at the Lateran, usually called St. John Lateran. Every new pope takes possession of it soon after his election.
History
- A gift of Constantine. After the Edict of Milan (313), the emperor Constantine gave the Church the Lateran palace, which had belonged to the noble Laterani family, and built a great basilica beside it.
- Dedication. Pope St. Sylvester I dedicated the basilica to Christ the Savior, traditionally on November 9, 324. Later the two St. Johns were added as patrons, and the name St. John Lateran stuck.
- Home of the popes. For about a thousand years the popes lived at the Lateran palace, until the papacy moved to Avignon in the fourteenth century; when they returned they settled at the Vatican.
- Councils. Five ecumenical councils met at the Lateran, including the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), which defined the doctrine of transubstantiation and required annual confession and Easter Communion.
- Rebuilt many times. The basilica was damaged by earthquakes, fires and invasions and rebuilt again and again; its present interior is largely the work of Francesco Borromini in the seventeenth century.
- The Lateran Treaty. The 1929 treaty between the Holy See and Italy that created Vatican City was signed in the Lateran palace.
Across the street is the Scala Santa, the Holy Stairs, venerated as the steps Jesus climbed in Pilate’s praetorium, which pilgrims ascend on their knees.
What the feast means
Celebrating the dedication of a building may seem strange, but the feast points beyond the stones. The church building is a sign of the Church made of people, “living stones” built on Christ:
Unto whom coming, as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen and made honourable by God:
Be you also as living stones built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
And each Christian is a temple of the Holy Spirit:
Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.
Honoring the Pope’s cathedral also expresses the unity of the universal Church with the successor of Peter. See the Chair of St. Peter and the prayer for the Pope.
The Scripture of the day
The traditional Mass for the dedication of a church begins with Jacob’s words at Bethel (Genesis 28:16–17):
And when Jacob awaked out of sleep, he said: Indeed the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.
And trembling he said: How terrible is this place! this is no other but the house of God, and the gate of heaven.
And continues with the psalm of pilgrims longing for God’s house (Psalm 83, Psalm 84 in modern Bibles):
How lovely are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts!
My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God.

A prayer for the feast
Written for this page:
Lord God, you chose to dwell among your people in houses of prayer,
and you make us living stones in your Church.
On this feast of the Pope’s cathedral, keep us united with the successor of Peter.
Bless our own parish church and all who pray there,
and make our hearts a fitting temple for your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica?
November 9. It is a feast; when November 9 falls on a Sunday it replaces the Sunday liturgy. In 2026 it falls on a Monday.
Is St. John Lateran the Pope’s church?
Yes. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, whose bishop is the Pope. St. Peter’s Basilica is not a cathedral.
Why is it called St. John Lateran?
It was first dedicated to Christ the Savior. Later it was also dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, and “Lateran” comes from the Laterani family who owned the land.
