To request a Catholic Mass intention for someone’s birthday, contact the parish where you hope the Mass will be celebrated. Give the person’s name, say that the intention is in thanksgiving for their life and for God’s blessing in the year ahead, and ask which Mass dates are available. The parish will tell you how it records intentions and whether a particular date can be accommodated.
What is a birthday Mass intention?
A Mass intention is the particular intention for which the priest offers the celebration of Mass. A birthday intention can be a simple prayer of thanksgiving for a living person. The Code of Canon Law, canons 945–947, addresses a priest’s acceptance of an offering to apply a Mass for a specific intention. It also says priests are encouraged to celebrate Mass for the intentions of the faithful, especially the needy, even without an offering. An offering is not a purchase of the Mass or of God’s grace.
Sample birthday Mass intentions
Keep the request brief. Replace the bracketed name before sending it to your parish:
- For [Name], in thanksgiving for the gift of life on their birthday and for God’s guidance in the coming year.
- For [Name] on their birthday, that they may grow in faith, hope and love.
- In thanksgiving for [Name] on their [age] birthday, and for the family and friends who support them.
- For [Name], celebrating a birthday today, with gratitude for the blessings of the past year and prayer for health and peace.
If the parish needs a shorter bulletin entry, “For [Name], in thanksgiving on their birthday” is enough. Ask the parish whether it publishes or announces the intention; practices differ.
How to ask your parish
- Contact the parish office. Tell them the name and the birthday or preferred Mass date. Ask which dates are open; the exact birthday may not be available.
- Send a short intention. Use one of the examples above, or describe the person and your thanksgiving in one sentence. The parish may shorten the wording for its records or bulletin.
- Confirm the details. Check the date, Mass time, spelling of the name and any local instructions about an offering. If an offering is customary, ask the parish how it handles one; the Church does not treat an offering as a price for prayer.
You could write: “Hello, I would like to request a Mass intention for Maria Santos in thanksgiving on her birthday. Is there a Mass available on or near October 12? Please let me know what information you need and how the parish handles offerings. Thank you.”
Mass intention or Prayer of the Faithful?
These are related prayers, but they serve different parts of the liturgy. The Mass intention is the intention for which the priest offers the Mass. The Universal Prayer, also called the Prayer of the Faithful, is a series of petitions prayed by the assembly after the homily and Creed when applicable. It normally includes prayer for the Church, the world, those in need and the local community. A birthday petition for the celebrant can be one of those petitions when appropriate, subject to the celebrant’s or parish’s direction.

Will the Mass be a special birthday liturgy?
Requesting an intention does not by itself change the readings, prayers or other parts of the scheduled Mass. The parish and celebrant follow the Church’s liturgical calendar and local practice. If you hope to arrange a family celebration, have the person’s name mentioned, or include a petition, ask the parish what is possible before preparing anything for the liturgy.
